Most Americans Don’t Believe in This Biblical Principle

A new study reveals that a shocking amount of Christians do not believe in the Trinity.

Conducted by the Cultural Research Center (CRC) at Arizona Christian University in January, the study reveals the beliefs of 2,100 adults. Of the participants, only 40% say they believe in God at all. Fifty-nine percent of those believe in Jesus Christ, and only 29% believe in the Holy Spirit.

“When put together, a mere one out of every 10 adults (11%) believes in the existence and influence of all three persons of the trinity — whether they call the triumvirate God by that name or not,” the study said, adding that only 16% of self-described Christians believe in the Trinity.

“These results are further evidence of the limited or lack of trust Americans have in the Bible, the limitations we place on the authority and influence of God, and our refusal to cooperate with God by living in harmony with His ways and purposes,” said George Barna, CRC Director of Research. “Even the statistics for the groups that are most in-tune with biblical teachings, such as belief in the nature and impact of the Trinity, are shockingly low for a nation in which most people claim to be Christian.”

Even sadder, Barna noted that many Americans do not grasp basic biblical knowledge.

“We know from our national worldview tracking studies that most Americans are uninformed about the many essential biblical teachings, ranging from the Ten Commandments and the Trinity, to matters related to repentance, salvation, the chief purpose of life, and divine measures of success,” he said.

He continued, “These findings about America’s ignorance or rejection of the trinity are simply another in a long list of examples of people living without the truths and life principles of God shaping their life.”

Last year, Pew Research shared similar findings, although they did note that the majority of people do believe in something spiritual, but whether or not those beliefs are biblical varies. The group reported:

  • 86% believe people have a soul or spirit in addition to their physical body.
  • 83% believe in God or a universal spirit.
  • 79% believe there is something spiritual beyond the natural world, even if we can’t see it.
  • 70% believe in an afterlife (heaven, hell or both)

These results should be a wakeup call for Christians to know the Bible and what it says. Apologetics are needed, and a rooted Christian should know biblical truths.

Pew Research also noted that Christianity is no longer declining, and although we need to work on our knowledge of theology, that is encouraging.

“After many years of steady decline, the share of Americans who identify as Christians shows signs of leveling off – at least temporarily – at slightly above six-in-ten, according to a massive new Pew Research Center survey of 36,908 U.S. adults,” Pew said on Instagram.
