Moviegoers Want Inspiring, Family-Friendly Entertainment
By Movieguide® Staff
Moviegoers want to see inspiring, family-friendly content, Movieguide® found in its 2024 Report to the Entertainment Industry.
“…What most moviegoers (and most non-moviegoers for that matter) want to see from Hollywood and the Entertainment Industry [is] Good conquering evil, Truth vanquishing falsehood, Justice prevailing over injustice, and Beauty overcoming vileness,” Movieguide®’s report reads.
Movieguide® rates films’ production quality, entertainment value, and artistic merit using a four-star rating system—four stars mean “Excellent,” three stars mean “Good,” two stars mean “Fair,” one star means “Poor” and zero stars mean “Zero.”
Movies’ moral, theological and philosophical acceptability is rated on a scale from -4 to +4:
Thus, a +2 to +4 Acceptability Rating is acceptable for all ages, whereas +1 movies require caution for young children (typically ages 2-7), -1 movies require caution for older children (typically pre-teenagers or ages 8-15), and movies receiving -2 from MOVIEGUIDE® require some level of strong or extreme caution for mature audiences, typically older teenagers and/or many adults. Of course, movies receiving -3 or -4 are considered unacceptable for all ages.
Based on Movieguide®’s ratings, the Top 25 domestic earners with a strong or very strong Christian or redemptive worldview averaged $244.95 million when combined.
Alternatively, R-rated movies earned only $207.13 million, and films in the Top 25 that featured strong or very strong humanist, occult, pagan, false religious or romantic worldviews averaged only $89.62 million in 2023.
Ultimately, movies in the Top 25 with a Christian worldview totaled $1.92 billion last year when combined.
What does this mean for moviemakers?
“First, filmmakers (especially filmmakers trying to make movies for a broad audience) have a much better chance of reaching the Top 10 Movies at the Domestic Box Office, and making more money, if they insert strong or very strong Christian, biblical, moral, and/or redemptive content and values into their movies,” Movieguide® says.
Avoiding negative, non-Christian, anti-Christian, amoral, immoral or false content will make a filmmaker two to four times more likely to reach the Top 10 or Top 25 at the domestic box office. Eliminating graphic sex, nudity, violence, foul language and substance abuse will also help movies succeed.
Hollywood would do well to remember that most viewers want to see movies with their whole family—kids and grandparents alike—and will put their money behind content that upholds their values.
“The vast majority of people prefer to see highly entertaining movies with strong and inspiring Christian, redemptive, moral content and values (often the stronger the better),” Movieguide® concludes.
