‘Laughter, Screams and New Tunes’: Muppets Get New Ride at Disney World

The Muppets are getting an upgrade at Disney’s Hollywood Studios!
Jim Henson’s beloved characters will be taking over the theme park’s Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, which is one of the most popular rides in the park.
“We know so many of you share our love for The Muppets and know their energy will be a perfect fit for this coaster,” a post from the Disney Parks Blog reads. “Plus, as the first Disney ride ever to feature The Muppets, there’s sure to be laughter, screams and new tunes for this attraction for fans to enjoy throughout the adventure and plenty of Muppets-themed merchandise on Sunset Boulevard!”
While this is exciting news, many fans are sad to hear that the move means the Muppets’ Muppet*Vision 3D film attraction will be shuttered to make room for a new MONSTERS INC. land coming to the park.
The MONSTERS INC. area will feature “a MONSTERS INC-themed coaster and a new theater show in the former Muppets Theater,” per The Wrap, as well as retail and dining locations.
Many people have expressed their displeasure and sadness at the closing of this unique ride, especially as it “was one of the last projects that Jim Henson worked on and the last time he performed as Kermit,” The Wrap wrote. “It [opened] almost exactly a year following Henson’s death. It would be his final masterpiece — and a huge success.”
Disney has not announced an official closing date for Muppet*Vision but has told fans that there is “plenty of time” to see the show one last time.
PEOPLE reported that the closure will “very likely be in 2025, as the company previously shared this past summer that work on the new MONSTERS INC land ‘is slated to begin next year.’”
These plans come after a 2023 announcement that Disney World wouldn’t be going ahead with a proposed Disney campus in Lake Nona, Florida.
