Musician Ben Fuller Celebrates 5 Years of Sobriety

Musician Ben Fuller praised the Lord for five years of sobriety and explained how he hopes to be an inspiration for others struggling with addiction.

“Five years is a long time; it’s a short time, though. And [God] has cleaned me up. He’s fixed me up. He sent me out with my brokenness, and my mess, and my message, and all the things in my testimony to tell the truth,” Fuller told TBN. “But I just want to encourage other young people and even older people, like, hey, you can restart your life. You can say yes to the Lord and watch Him change you. And so, I’m just excited to be a part of what God is doing in this amazing season of revival.”

Fuller got into alcohol at a young age to cope with a hard family life. When his alcoholism was at its worst, the singer would drink 15-20 beers a night and was surrounded by friends who would do the same. Eventually, no amount of drinking could ease his pain and Fuller moved on to hard drugs to cope with the troubles that plagued him. His world was shattered, however, when his close friend died from a heroin overdose, causing him to realize he needed to sober up.

Seeking help, Fuller got reacquainted with a family from his hometown who was willing to take him in and help him wean off the substances he was addicted to.

“I think that that is the thing about addiction, is that so many people try to quit on their own or find other things to take the place of those bad things, like working out or a new job or a new town, or new friends even,” Fuller said. “I’m just like, ‘What else is there? There’s got to be something more.’”

The family also invited Fuller to church, where God immediately spoke to him and further gave him a reason – and a way – to clean himself up.

“In that moment of hearing the music and the worship and seeing everyone’s hands in the air and just feeling the Holy Spirit tangible in the room, it was like, this is what I’ve been looking for” Fuller recalled.

“Well, if you are who they say you are, then fix me. Help me,” he cried out to God. “Over the course of two and a half months — I mean, the sanctification process is obviously ongoing forever — but my alcohol habit, drugs, sleeping around just ceased.”

Soon after, Fuller began writing songs praising the Lord for His work in him, launching his career in Christian music and helping millions in their walk with the Lord. It’s amazing how much the Lord has moved in Fuller’s life in the five years since he overcame his addictions.

Despite growing up outside of the church, Ben Fuller explained how God transformed his life and saved him from addiction to find freedom and fullness in Christ.

“I grew up on a dairy farm in southern Vermont, and so Vermont, what I didn’t know at the time, was 2% Christian. And so, I only went to church for funerals and weddings, and Jesus was just a swear word,” Fuller told 99.1 Joy FM. “You don’t know what you don’t know. And so, as I grew up, I wasn’t learning these things, I wasn’t hearing anything different. And so, I never heard the Gospel.”

Instead, Fuller was raised in a hard family and grew up very quickly. He was instilled with a hard work ethic from a very young age but along with that came heavy addictions.

“I struggled so much,” he said. “At 16 years old, I wanted to die…I didn’t think anybody loved me. I had it all together on the outside, and on the inside, I was just empty. That turned into 14 years and a half of cocaine, alcohol, sleeping around, just these addictions that I couldn’t break and that I thought I would find comfort in and that turned out to just be empty. Void after void after void.”
