NCIS Renewed for Season 22

Looking ahead to its fall lineup, CBS renewed NCIS and THE NEIGHBORHOOD for their 22nd and 7th seasons.

“THE NEIGHBORHOOD and NCIS are the very best definition of a CBS comedy and drama,” said Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment. “They embody authentic storytelling with heart, humor, and family dynamics. We are proud to bring them back next season.”

These renewals add to CBS’ already confirmed list of returning shows, which includes all three components of the FBI series.

“The all-FBI Tuesday is a powerful force to be reckoned with on our primetime schedule,” Reisenbach said when their renewal was announced. “Dick Wolf and the talent in front and behind the camera on all three series continue to deliver top-notch storytelling, riveting action and intrigue that has captivated a dedicated fanbase steadily across multiple seasons. We are excited to see what next season holds for all these heroic characters.”

While the FBI series dominates the network’s Tuesday television, THE NEIGHBORHOOD and NCIS are staples on Monday night.

The sixth season of THE NEIGHBORHOOD currently averages 7.9 million viewers per episode. The comedy-drama follows a midwestern white family adjusting to moving into a predominantly black neighborhood in Pasadena, California. The show, created by Jim Reynolds, stars Cedric the Entertainer, Max Greenfield, Beth Behrs and Tichina Arnold.

NCIS, meanwhile, remains one of CBS’ top-performing shows, drawing an average viewership of 12.9 million during its current 21st season. The show has spawned multiple spinoffs, which also draw high viewership for CBS. NCIS: HAWAII and NCIS: SYDNEY are both currently running, with two more shows in the NCIS universe currently in the works.

A Gibbs prequel—NCIS: ORIGINS—is currently in the works, as is a show following the storyline of Anthony DiNozzo and Ziva David after their exit from NCIS.

With so many NCIS series running, the franchise recently hit a monster milestone: its 1,000th episode.

Movieguide® previously reported:

NCIS just aired its 1000th episode on April 15, and actor Brian Dietzen discussed his excitement for this milestone as well as the upcoming season finale.

In a discussion with Entertainment Weekly, the actor, who plays medical examiner Jimmy Palmer, shared, “I love these people that I work with, and our crew that’s been together with us for 21 years, a lot of them all the way through from the beginning to now. I think you can see that camaraderie and the comfort and familiarity. It comes through to viewers.”

EW asked Dietzen more about how the 1000th episode “honors the deepest of [the show’s] deep roots.”

Dietzen responded, “Well, I think you’ve got to honor everything. There are a lot of people. Those 1,000 episodes don’t happen without over 1,000 people working behind the scenes over the course of these 21 years, not just on our show, but on our sister shows as well.”
