Netflix Acquires Biblical Epic MARY

Netflix has acquired the biblically based MARY, which follows the difficulties Jesus’ mother faces after her immaculate conception.
“MARY is a coming-of-age biblical epic in which Mary is shunned following a miraculous conception and forced into hiding. When King Herod ignites a murderous pursuit for her newborn baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph go on the run — bound together by fate and driven by courage — to save his life at all costs,” a synopsis of the movie reads.
The movie made waves during its production as it features award-winning actor Anthony Hopkins as King Herod.
“At this time of my life, I’m drawn to the challenge of complex scripts. As well, the level of the detail given to this production with extraordinary sets, props and costumes — makes me proud to be a part of this,” Hopkins said in April when production was beginning.
“Hopkins was primed to play King Herod the Great,” added producer Mary Aloe. “He embodied this historical figure of a king who was steeped in mental illness and greed with such great ferocity”
Pastor Joel Osteen has also been a part of the project and plans to be heavily involved in the marketing and promotion of the movie.
“What drew me to this project was how the script represents a real breakthrough in the telling of Mary’s story,” Osteen said. “It draws the audience into her incredible journey in becoming one of the most influential women in all of history.”
Those who worked on the movie believe Mary’s incredible journey is precisely why this story will be appealing to all audiences whether they have a faith background or not.
“I want to give the world a portrayal of the real human Mary,” said director DJ Caruso. “Her story has a lesser-known beginning; it is profoundly worthy of being told. Portraying her from birth through childhood and presenting her as a human being with apprehensions and fears will be a celebration of everything inspiring and gut-wrenching about her journey.”
Netflix is set to release the movie on its platform later this year.
