THE CROWN announced a filming hiatus until 2021, pushing the season five release date to 2022.
Just weeks after creator Peter Morgan announced that the popular Netflix series would go on for a sixth and final season, Last Bank Pictures revealed that the show won’t start production on season five until June 2021.

This means fans will have to wait almost two years for new episodes after the season four premiere.
According to Deadline, the break in filming isn’t related to the coronavirus and was always part of the production’s plans.
This break follows the trend between season two and three, when the show had a two-year gap between when Claire Foy, who originally played Queen Elizabeth, passed the crown to Olivia Coleman.
During the current break, the iconic role will move from Coleman to Imelda Staunton for the last two seasons. Lesley Manville will then play Princess Margaret, the Queen’s sister.
New casting announcements are expected in the coming months.
Season six is set to start production in 2022.
Movieguide® previously reported that season four wrapped filming just before the coronavirus shutdown and will hit Netflix later this year.
Tobias Menzies, who plays Prince Philip, revealed what viewers can expect from the fourth season.
“[Queen Elizabeth’s] kids start to come into the foreground. Charles comes into the foreground, Diana is a big part of Season 4,” he said.
The show also introduces viewers to Margaret Thatcher, the former British prime minister.
Season three episode THE CROWN: MOONDUST was nominated for the Epiphany Prize® for Most Inspiring TV Program and the Faith and Freedom Award® for TV at last year’s Movieguide® Awards.
Menzies also earned a nomination for his role in the same episode.
