The toy-to-movie trope will have yet another film make it to the big screen with Universal’s latest venture — a new LEGO NINJAGO movie.
“After creating and writing the first many seasons of the long-running animated series NINJAGO for The Lego Group, brothers Kevin and Dan Hageman have been enlisted to script a new film in the LEGO NINJAGO franchise for Universal Pictures,” Deadline announced on Oct. 31.
“News of the new NINJAGO comes following word that Jake Kasdan, Patty Jenkins and Joe Cornish are on board to direct live-action Lego movies for Universal,” Deadline reported. “Details as to the plot of the Hagemans’ film are under wraps.”
“Kasdan is directing off a script by Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul (THE D TRAIN, THE GRINDER) based on an original idea and previous draft by Matt Mider and Kevin Burrows (THE PICKUP, ANIMAL FRIENDS),” Jay’s Brick Blog said. “Patty Jenkins’ (of WONDER WOMAN fame) project is from a script she wrote with former DC Entertainment President Geoff Johns (WONDER WOMAN 1984, TV’s THE FLASH).”
Jill Wilfert and Ryan Christians will produce the movie. Matt Reilly, Universal’s executive VP of production development, and Jaqueline Garell, Universal’s director of production development, will supervise the project.
“Ninjago was introduced in 2011 as a line of ninja-themed construction toys before evolving into a major multimedia property,” Deadline said. “The story surrounding it follows a group of young ninja warriors who protect their world, known as Ninjago, from various evil forces. In addition to assorted video games, books and graphic novels, Lego Ninjago is the focus of the aforementioned, hugely popular animated series NINJAGO, which ran for 15 seasons across Cartoon Network and Netflix.”
Legoland also features Ninjago attractions in its park. THE LEGO NINJAGO MOVIE, released in 2017, helped further the franchise. NINJAGO: DRAGONS RISING is the franchise’s most recent spinoff. It features 40 episodes across two seasons. Its third season will come out in 2025.
THE LEGO NINJAGO MOVIE is nonstop ninja nuttiness, with funny, creative twists. It doesn’t seem to have the Eastern mysticism that infects the toy and television incarnations of LEGO’s Ninjago franchise. In fact, the movie has a strong pro-family worldview…
