New STAR TREK Projects are ‘Putting Good into the World’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Fifty-eight years later, STAR TREK is still going strong, and the popular sci-fi franchise recently revealed its plans for this next phase.

“STAR TREK is an institution,” Alex Kurtzman, who oversees all STAR TREK projects, recently told Variety. “Doing STAR TREK means that you have to deliver something that’s entirely familiar and entirely fresh at the same time.”

So, what’s next?

“Several of the shows that form STAR TREK’s current streaming era will of course continue—like the smash-hit success STRANGE NEW WORLDS, currently filming its third season; the animated series LOWER DECKS; and the kids-focused 3DCG series PRODIGY, which has found a new streaming home at Netflix after being suddenly and controversially axed from Paramount+ last year,” Gizmodo reported

A portion of Movieguide®’s review of the first season of STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS reads:

The first season of STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS has many exciting and uplifting heroic moments, and good humor. Of all the recent live action Star Trek series, STRANGE NEW WORLDS seems to come closest to the spirit of the original series. However, the episodes sometimes have brief foul language. Also, three episodes involve light sexual references, there’s some extreme violence in Episode Nine, and Episode Five contains a reference to bisexual dating. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children for STRANGE NEW WORLDS.

The franchise is also getting ready to launch a new show called STARFLEET ACADEMY and a new movie, SECTION 31, starring Academy Award-winning Michelle Yeoh.

SECTION 31’s director, Olatunde Osunsanmi, shared his view of creating new STAR TREK stories, saying, “Is it putting good into the world? Are these characters ultimately putting good into the world? And, taking a step back, are we putting good into the world? Are we inspiring humans watching this to be good? That’s, for me, what I’ve always admired about STAR TREK.”

There are also plans for a fourth STAR TREK movie.

“Story details remain under a powerful cloaking device, but Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot still intend the project to be the final chapter for the cast that rebooted the franchise in movie theaters with 2009’s STAR TREK,” Variety wrote, adding that the plan is to bring back the original cast, which includes Chris Pine, Zoe Saldaña, John Cho, Karl Urban and Simon Pegg.

A portion of the Movieguide® review reads:

STAR TREK is an exciting, entertaining, popcorn movie. The intensity never lets up, and the special effects are first-rate, but this is not the STAR TREK older generations remember. This new STAR TREK takes place in a more messy, amoral universe that honors cheating, rebellion and some immorality. That said, the movie does capture the essence of STAR TREK, with positive moral qualities, including heroes who sacrifice themselves to save others.

Movieguide® also reviewed the last installment in the STAR TREK movie franchise, STAR TREK BEYOND:

STAR TREK BEYOND is a thrilling space adventure with a cohesive plot and story structure. It often plays like an entertaining homage to other space epics, including other STAR TREK movies. Even better, it has a solid moral, redemptive worldview stressing hope, unity, self-sacrifice, and defending life against spiteful, selfish violence and revenge. That said, the staging is sometimes uninvolving. Also, STAR TREK BEYOND has too much gratuitous foul language, some scary violence and brief politically correct content. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution.
