NFL Rolls out New Helmets to Protect Players From Head Injury

As the rate of head injury continues to increase in the NFL, the league is doing all that they can to help keep the players protected as much as possible.

The NFL first rolled out the helmet guardian cap that players can choose to wear. The guardian cap is a padded cover that goes on the outside of the helmet.

Another effort the NFL has made is new helmets that provide more support and protection.

“Using high-tech research to design helmets for each position. The league is subjecting dummies in a lab to hits like this in order to shield players from hits like this,” a video shared by NBC said.

One of the main reasons for this helmet is because Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered his third major concussion this season.

Movieguide® reported:

Some are calling for Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to retire from the game following yet another concussion which he got during a Thursday night game against the Buffalo Bills.

“In a scary moment during the third quarter, Tagovailoa was scrambling for a first down when he lowered his body into Bills safety Damar Hamlin. After the hit, the QB fell and went into a fencing response, with arms clenched and fingers curled. Dolphins offensive lineman Austin Jackson said he could tell by Tagovailoa’s eyes that the QB ‘wasn’t there all the way,’” Church Leaders reported.

“They’re dramatic changes over the last couple of years as we got closer to position specificity,” the video continued. “A quarterback and a linebacker are not necessarily playing the same sport on every play and the frequency of their head impacts demonstrates that.”

According to the NFL, the league has provided players with the “five safest helmets ever tested, a record 12 new models, and eight new position-specific helmets designed to provide players with the best protection for their position – evidence of the rapid rate of helmet innovation made possible by the league’s investments and collaboration with manufacturers, medical and engineering experts and club staff.”

Each year prior to the start of the season, “players work closely with their club equipment managers to determine the helmet that offers the best fit, protection and comfort. Players are choosing the top-performing models that can help keep them in the game: this year, nearly 98% of players are wearing top-performing helmets.”
