MLB Team Proclaims God’s Goodness at First-Ever Faith Night

The Baltimore Orioles hosted its first-ever Faith Night on Tuesday, Aug. 13.

“Six Orioles players — Trevor Rogers, Jordan Westburg, Ryan O’Hearn, Gunnar Henderson, Danny Coulombe and James McCann — boldly shared their testimonies of faith in Jesus Christ while thousands of fans crowded into the lower sections between first and third bases to hear,” Sports Spectrum reported.

Starting pitcher, Trevor Rodgers, opened up the night with his testimony.

Per The Baltimore Sun, “When he was swapped from the Miami Marlins to the Orioles at the trade deadline two weeks ago, Rogers said at the Orioles’ first Faith Night promotion, it brought an upsetting level of uncertainty, but trusting in his Christian faith calmed the waters and left him feeling he was exactly where he was meant to be.”

“The timing — the first Faith Night, my first start in Baltimore, that’s God [working] right there,” Rodgers said as the 6,000-person crowd cheered. “To be around such a good group of guys, such good Christian guys…this is really fun, and I’m so happy to be here in Baltimore.”

Several Baltimore players agreed with him.

“This is the most faithful team I’ve ever been around,” Coulombe said.

Westburg echoed, “[I’ve] never been in a clubhouse with so many players who love Jesus Christ and follow Him every single day.”

“My faith means everything to me,” he said before the Faith Night. “It’s who I am, who I identify as. I don’t identify as a baseball player or a person just drifting through this world. I believe I’m held to a higher standard, and I’m called to be something more than just aimlessly wondering why I’m here or have an idea why I am where I’m at. So, it’s my number one reason. Everybody asks, ‘What’s your reason?’ That’s mine.”

Henderson also reflected on the importance of his faith.

“It’s important to me, and I feel like a lot of guys in here, to just express our love for God,” he explained. “To be able to incorporate it into our daily lives, which is kind of tough in the baseball world because of the schedule. We’re playing every day of the week, so being able to show that and help bring somebody else who might not know who He is, is important.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Henderson:

The Baltimore Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson has quickly made his mark in the Orioles organization.

Per Sports Spectrum, “The 22-year-old is second in MLB with 16 home runs (behind only Houston’s Kyle Tucker and on pace to surpass Baltimore’s franchise record of 53 homers in a season) in just his second full year in the majors. He’s also accumulated 34 RBIs and a .271 batting average thus far as he’s led Baltimore to a 29-17 record and second place in the AL East…”

Last season, Henderson earned the Rookie of the Year award. In his acceptance speech, he made sure to credit the Lord for his success.

“First, I’d like to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,” Henderson began to say. “Without Him, I wouldn’t be here tonight. I can’t thank Him enough for just blessing me with the ability.”
