Paramount+ Announces Changes to Make Platform Safer for Kids

By Movieguide® Contributor

Paramount+ is planning new changes to make the streaming service an “easy, fun place” for kids.

Dan Reich, executive vice president and global head of product and design of Paramount+, recently shared with The Verge that the platform’s library of children’s content is “the number two content draw” for Paramount+.

“According to parent Paramount Global, the network’s Kids & Family content consistently ranks among the most watched and re-watched programming on Paramount+,” Deadline reported

The popularity of its kids’ programming is why Paramount has decided to overhaul its children’s content library, making it an “easy, fun place tailored to the demo.”

So, what will these changes entail?

According to Tech Radar, it is now “easier to set up children’s profiles and toggle on Kids Mode, and that’s now been supplemented with a new Younger Kids option that can limit shows to ones rated TV-Y and G but not older.”

“There is also an Older Kids option that ups the allowed age rating to PG,” the outlet continued. “Whichever option you use, Paramount says it won’t be collecting personal data from your kids’ accounts, and it won’t be offering personalized recommendations to under-sevens.”

Reich also shared that more changes are coming, including “tweaks” to the profile creation section and AI-generated playlists of kids’ content.

Paramount has always been conscious of the popularity of its children’s content. Movieguide® previously reported:

While Disney+ and Netflix are the frontrunners for streaming, smaller streamers like Paramount Plus are carving out their audiences of their own in one of the fastest-growing markets in entertainment.

Paramount Plus’ early success mirrors Disney’s model of focussing on family-friendly content, which saw Disney+ skyrocket to compete with Netflix within a year after launch.

Another significant draw to Paramount Plus came from its catalog of Nickelodeon shows like SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS, PAW PATROL, and iCARLY.

“The most important thing for Paramount plus now is exposing consumers to the offering, especially as we ramp up content,” ViacomCBS president-CEO Bob Bakish said.

“We think kids and family in this continued COVID time has real opportunity for us,” Bakish said. “‘Paw Patrol’ worked well and we’re excited about ‘Clifford.’”

While Disney+ still leads the way in terms of family content, other streamers are taking note that moral content wins, whether that is at the box office or at home on major streaming platforms.
