Parents Warn Against Increase In Male Nudity On Screens: ‘Where’s The Entertainment Integrity?’
By Movieguide® Contributor
A nonpartisan media watchdog group brought a new concern to the public’s attention: a rise in male nudity on screens.
The Parents Television and Media Council called out the HBO show EUPHORIA as one of the worst offenders in the rise of nudity.
The group found 21 instances of male nudity in the second season of the show, just slightly more than the 19 instances of female nudity.
This is in addition to EUPHORIA’s graphic sexual scenes and use of obscenities throughout both seasons of the show.
“It really seems to be now shock value,” PTC president Tim Winter said. “Where’s the entertainment integrity? Where’s the storytelling?”
He also rejected the idea that this rise in male nudity onscreen is a response to the decades of female nudity and oversexualization in Hollywood.
“So why is it that Hollywood believes the remedy to its longstanding grotesque sexualization of women is to escalate its sexualization of men? This would be laughable if it wasn’t so tragic,” Winter said. “The rightful remedy for Hollywood’s sexualization of women is to cease its sexualization of women, not to sexualize men — or children — in equal portions.”
Movieguide® has previously reported on other groups that have criticized EUPHORIA’s content:
The Drug Abuse Resistance Education program, or D.A.R.E., recently condemned HBO’s teen drama EUPHORIA for excessive drug abuse, sex and violence.
The second season of EUPHORIA, which stars SPIDER-MAN actress Zendaya, depicts the life of a high school student who battles a drug addiction.
“Rather than further each parent’s desire to keep their children safe from the potentially horrific consequences of drug abuse and other high-risk behavior, HBO’s television drama, ‘Euphoria,’ chooses to misguidedly glorify and erroneously depict high school student drug use, addiction, anonymous sex, violence, and other destructive behaviors as common and widespread in today’s world,” D.A.R.E. said in a statement.
D.A.R.E. warned parents of the excessive and immoral content in EUPHORIA and that its target audience is teenagers.
“It is unfortunate that HBO, social media, television program reviewers, and paid advertising have chosen to refer to the show as ‘groundbreaking,’ rather than recognizing the potential negative consequences on school age children who today face unparalleled risks and mental health challenges,” the statement reads.
