Pirates’ Paul Skenes to Donate $100 Per Strikeout to Gary Sinise Foundation

Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes will donate $100 to the Gary Sinise Foundation for every strikeout he earns this season.

Skenes aims to raise nearly $100,000 for the foundation to help veterans and first responders.

“Join me this season as I support the Gary Sinise Foundation in raising funds for our nation’s veterans and first responders. I am personally donating $100 for every strikeout I record this season. Please click the link in my bio to join my mission and make your donation!” the pitcher posted on X.

Fox News reported, “Actor and humanitarian Gary Sinise started his foundation in 2011 after spending the previous decade volunteering with other organizations. In the past decade, the foundation has helped expand service efforts, providing the military, veteran and first responder communities with additional fundraising and outreach.”

“We owe a debt to those who protect our freedom and families,” Skenes wrote. “Having veterans in my own family, and having spent two years at the Air Force Academy, my mission is to now support these heroes and their families.”

“This is amazing! Thank you @paulskenes for your support of our nation’s heroes!” the Gary Sinise Foundation commented.

This isn’t the first time Skenes has used his platform to donate to non-profits helping veterans.

While at LSU last year, Skenes donated $60,000 to the Folds of Honor, which is dedicated to “Providing educational scholarships to the children and spouses of America’s fallen or disabled service-members and first responders.”

Skenes pledged “a donation of $10 for each strikeout I record this season to Folds of Honor.”

The athlete was the number one overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft. Before that, he played for the LSU Tigers and gained the National Pitcher of the Year and the College World Series Most Outstanding Player awards.

As a young prospect in the Pirates organization, Skenes will begin his career in the minor league at Triple-A Indianapolis and hopefully make his way to the majors by the end of this season.

Movieguide® previously reported on the Gary Sinise Foundation:

Actor and musician Gary Sinise explained how one role changed his entire life and gave him a newfound passion.

In 1994, Sinise played the role of Lt. Dan in the hit movie FORREST GUMP. The character was a combat veteran injured in the line of duty during the Vietnam War.

“I got so many letters from Vietnam veterans and people reaching out to me who were moved by the story of Lt. Dan,” Sinise told the AARP. “Many from service members who had been wounded in combat.”

A few weeks after the movie’s release, the Disabled American Veterans organization asked Sinise to come to one of the organization’s national conventions in Chicago.

“When I walked out on stage, there were more than 2,000 wounded veterans in the audience, going back all the way to World War II,” Sinise explained. “They were applauding me for playing Lt. Dan, and I was presented with an award for my ‘hard work’ on the film.”
