‘Power of Christ to Free’: NHL Wife Kylie Slavin Shares Testimony
By Movieguide® Contributor
Kylie Slavin, wife of National Hockey League player Jacob Slavin, shared how God transformed her life on Sports Spectrum’s “I Once Was” series.
“In college, Kylie Slavin approached faith as something that was ‘based upon works.’ But her eyes were opened when a camp counselor shared with her the popular Bible verse John 3:16 and emphasized that ‘whoever believes in Him’ has eternal life, not whoever does the right things,” Sports Spectrum reported.
Through this, Slavin recognized her need for a Savior and knew works wouldn’t get her to heaven.
“I needed Him as my Savior,” she began. “He was no longer at this tagline of ‘Oh, I’m a Christian, and I need to talk about Jesus so that people will think I’m a Christian.’ But I actually needed Him to take my sin from me.”
However, around the same time she established her faith in Jesus, she was introduced to pornography, an addiction she would fight for several years.
“The year that I got invited to church camp was the same year that I was introduced to pornography, and then for the next five years, from 17 to 21, I still struggled with pornography,” she added. “I was so used to and accustomed to just hiding everything and making everybody think that I was good and not letting anybody know anything in the depths of me.”
Slavin felt trapped by her sin for years. She believed she would struggle with it until she died.
One day, though, she finally confessed her sin to her husband and “experienced the freedom that Christ offers us.”
“I knew Jesus loved me, I knew I was saved, but I did not know what freedom in Christ meant and what true joy in Christ meant,” she said.
“Now I’m excited to share with people the power of Christ to free us from things that we just feel so trapped in and that we feel like we could never escape from,” Slavin concluded.
Slavin and her husband are putting their faith into action by fighting human trafficking in the Philippines. Their goal is to raise $1 million. They’re encouraging Jacob’s fans to donate to the cause through the end of the regular season.
“We’ve always tried to be generous with our giving. We realized that his platform for hockey will only last so long,” she said.
“There’s another verse that we kind of live by with this, with this campaign, and it says, ‘Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver,’” she added.
Movieguide® recently reported on Jacob Slavin:
On Sports Spectrum’s “I Once Was,” Slavin revealed when his faith became his own.
“I was kind of challenged by one of my assistant coaches,” he began. “We’re sitting in the locker room, and he looked at me and said, ‘Jacob, what kind of faith do you have?’ I kind of looked at him, puzzled by the question of like, ‘What are you talking about? I’m Christian.’ He’s like, ‘No, do you have your own personal relationship with Jesus?’ So, I was just being challenged, left and right, to really not rely on my parents’ faith anymore.”
“I had to have my own personal relationship with Jesus at this point and so from that moment I really started understanding what it meant to be a follower of Christ,” he continued. “It wasn’t about works, it wasn’t about anything I do or do not do but it was all about the work of Jesus on the cross.”
