Prime Video Renews This Hit Bible Show for Season 2

By Movieguide® Contributor

Less than a month after HOUSE OF DAVID’s debut, Prime Video has already confirmed a second season for the series.

“We are humbled by the extraordinary reaction this show has earned from the faith audience worldwide,” said The Wonder Project’s Jon Erwin and Jon Gunn of the news. “Thanks to them and our partners at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, Wonder Project will bring more of the Bible and this epic saga to a global audience. Congratulations to our incredible cast and crew.”

Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, added in a press release, “Jon Erwin and Jon Gunn’s compelling creative vision has solidified our belief in the series and we are excited to deliver more of the story to our customers. We look forward to a continued journey with Wonder Project as we further expand our slate to encompass faith-based series.”

The first season, which premiered on Prime Video on Feb. 27, sees “the ascent of the biblical figure, David, who becomes the most celebrated king of Israel. The series follows the once-mighty King Saul as he falls victim to his own pride. At the direction of God, the prophet Samuel anoints an unlikely, outcast teenager as the new king. As one leader falls, another must rise.”

Movieguide® praised the first three episodes’ strong biblical worldview:

The first three episodes of HOUSE OF DAVID are a marvelous, engrossing, exciting depiction of David’s transition to anointed ruler and King Saul’s decline. The acting, direction and cinematography are first rate. Michael Iskander makes a compelling David, even when he’s just playing the lyre and singing. HOUSE OF DAVID also has a wonderful soundtrack. It makes the Hebrew Scriptures come alive, despite some modern anachronisms such as one character saying, “Okay.” The first three episodes of HOUSE OF DAVID have some scary moments and violence, including ancient soldiers fighting. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children.

Audiences appreciated the show as well, launching it into the No. 2 spot on the platform behind REACHER and reaching over 22 million viewers, proving that people want meaningful entertainment options.

Season 2 will continue David’s story, following “the aftermath of the battle between David and Goliath and David’s rise to the throne. As he navigates palace politics, his family’s jealousy, and a growing romance, David steps deeper into his destiny and learns what it means to become a great leader.”

New episodes of Season 1 will continue to release weekly until the season finale on April 3.
