PRINCESS DIARIES Finally Gets Third Movie
By Movieguide® Contributor
PRINCESS DIARIES 3 is officially in the works.
“As a diehard fan of the original PRINCESS DIARIES, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life,” director Adele Lim said in a statement. “We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”
Per Variety, “The film is produced by Debra Martin Chase, who originated the film franchise starring Anne Hathaway as Mia Thermopolis, the down-to-earth teen-turned-queen of the fictional kingdom of Genovia, and Julie Andrews as her regal grandmother. Hathaway will also produce under her Somewhere Pictures banner. Naia Cucukov (Lim’s producing partner at 100 Tigers…) will executive produce the film alongside Melissa Stack.”
Hathaway shared her excitement for the movie on Instagram.
“Shut up!” she said, quoting her iconic line from the movie.
“Miracles happen ✨? Back to Genovia with @adeleblim @disney@somewherepictures. The fairy tale continues,” she wrote in the caption.
Many fans shared their excitement for the third film.
“NO WAY DONT PLAY WITH ME ?❤️?” one fan posted.
Another commented, “I screamed so loud.”
“THIS SAVED MY LIFE,” another said.
Movieguide® previously reported on the third film in April:
Anne Hathaway is updating fans about whether they can expect a third PRINCESS DIARIES movie.
“We’re in a good place. That’s all I can say. There’s nothing to announce yet. But we’re in a good place,” Hathaway, who plays Mia Thermopolis in the franchise, told V Magazine.
PRINCESS DIARIES and PRINCESS DIARIES 2: ROYAL ENGAGEMENT both earned +3 content ratings from Movieguide®.
Part of Movieguide®’s review for PRINCESS DIARIES 2 reads:
PRINCESS DIARIES 2 is one of the best constructed movies of the summer, with a straight-ahead plot, good sense of jeopardy, and a story that keeps the audience engrossed the whole time. Mia’s grandmother, Queen Clarisse, teaches values like duty, honor, patriotism, and kindness, and Mia demonstrates them in reaching out to the people of Genovia, especially the orphans. This movie is surprisingly free of any mean-spiritedness. Overall, it is one of the morally great movies of the year. Julie Andrews even gets to sing a song, which is amazing after her famous throat operation, and Anne Hathaway has matured beautifully as an actress. THE PRINCESS DIARIES 2 will delight and inform princesses and princes of all ages. Bravo!
“Plot details haven’t been confirmed, but the threequel is expected to continue the story in 2001’s THE PRINCESS DIARIES and the 2004 sequel ROYAL ENGAGEMENT rather than rebooting the series,” Variety reported.
Hopefully, the filmmakers take note of the family-friendly values that made the first two movies so iconic as they begin developing the third.
