Priscilla Shirer is sharing the things we need to engage in “spiritual warfare” — and the “key” God has given us to “unlock the power of heaven.”
“You’re going to have to stand firm against the schemes of the enemy,” she told Kirk Cameron during a conversation on TBN. “There is an enemy, and he’s got schemes.”
Shirer explained that the enemy “doesn’t throw out these blanketed strategies for the population,” and that he “knows your tendencies, your weaknesses, your habits. He knows the past abuses in your life that he can take advantage of. And so [if] he’s going to be that strategic in his attacks against you, you have to be that strategic in your pushing back against him.”
“And Paul tells us how,” she shared. “He says, ‘You know what? Here are the pieces of armor you have been given to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. All the other earthly solutions, you can pull them out if you want to. But the only thing that’s going to be effective against the devil in heavenly places where spiritual warfare is taking place day in and day out are the weapons that have been divinely authorized by God.’”
Shirer listed the “weapons of…righteousness and the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the spirit — that is the word of God,” but stressed that there “aren’t just six pieces of armor.”
She said, “The seventh, [Paul] says, ‘And pray. Devote yourself to prayer.’ It’s almost like he was saying the seventh weapon, prayer, is what infuses and activates the other six with the divine power that they need to be effective against the schemes of the enemy.”
“Prayer is the key that God has given us to unlock the power of heaven to be unleashed in the circumstances of Earth,” Shirer concluded.
Shirer has previously spoken about the importance of strategic prayer; something she explores in detail in her book, Fervent: A Woman’s Battle Plan for Serious, Specific and Strategic Prayer.

“I’m hoping that people will be reminded about the importance of strategy in our prayer life, intentionality about it,” she told CBN of the book’s message. “I think that we place such a priority on consistency, that we’ve missed on remembering that being thoughtful about what we’re actually saying is also important, and that God has given us powerful promises that we need to incorporate into our prayers.”
Shirer added, “That’s what sends the enemy to flight is God’s Words, not our words. So using them, being strategic to pray God’s own Word, being thoughtful about where we see the enemy at work and then applying God’s Word will change our prayer lives.”
The author and actress also spoke on the topic in an interview with The Oklahoman, calling strategic prayer “a revolutionary thought.”
“Prayer is still a focus in the church but I think its priority has been watered down just a little bit,” she explained. “We do still by and large talk about being consistent in prayer but we haven’t really talked to folks about what that is supposed to look like, that it isn’t just supposed to be consistent, it’s also supposed to be strategic.”
Shirer’s emphasis on strategic prayer is a good reminder that our prayers have a power that is “divinely authorized by God” to defeat our enemies.
