Property Brothers Share Important Lessons in Fatherhood

By Movieguide® Contributor

Ahead of Father’s Day this Sunday, Property Brother’s Jonathan and Drew Scott decided to look at the special lesson’s they have learned about fatherhood.

Jonathan told PEOPLE at first it was a “struggle” determining what the kids would call him.

“They have their dad and they have a great relationship with him, so he’s daddy. I couldn’t say papa because that’s what they call their grandpa — though at one point we tried to change the narrative and get them to call me papa instead, but they weren’t having it,” he said.

“Eventually, they came up with ‘my Jonathan,’ So, whenever they tell a story they say, ‘There’s daddy, there’s mommy, and he’s my Jonathan,’ he added.

Despite the love Jonathan had for his step-kids, it wasn’t quite reciprocated the same.

“One thing that was a struggle early on was that the kids didn’t necessarily run up and jump in my arms and give me a big hug,” Jonathan remembers. “I also remember several times where they’d be out with other kids and someone would say, ‘Oh your daddy’s so funny,’ and they’d be like, ‘That’s not my daddy, he’s my Jonathan.’ So that would hurt a little bit.”

However, overtime Jonathan realized “that in their mind, that’s not a mean thing to say — it’s how they know me.”

For Jonathan’s brother Drew, the “early stages” of his son, Parker’s, life was the most trial some.

“I was back in school finishing my Executive MBA and I had to fly out to Boston two months after Parker was born for two weeks,” he said. “The early stages of being born is a tough time to leave a parent solo.”

Drew added, “The real, open dialogue between Linda and me is a huge part of me being a better dad because she’ll give me a slight reminder if I’m not doing something I promised to do. It’s not just about the baby, it’s also about your communication with your partner.”

“Part of being a great dad is being a really great partner,” Jonathan agrees, adding, “Doing thoughtful things … it doesn’t matter if it’s big or small, but spending time connecting and finding out what their needs are, even if those duties shift back and forth,” Drew concluded.

The Scotts are not the only celebrities to honor their fathers and share their impact.

Movieguide® previously reported on Mickey Mantle’s memories with his late father:

Mantle said that his father often pushed him to excellence in everything he set out to do.

“Demanding better than good was Dad’s way of telling me there’s always a bigger Umpire than the man in blue on the field, and He’s the real judge of what you do. My father tried to model my baseball techniques from the start as a writer works on a novel, or a composer on a symphony,” he said.

“Dad hammered baseball into me for recreation, sure. But it was more than that. He was teaching me confidence by having unlimited faith in me. Dad was 35 and I was 15 when we played week-ends for the Spavinaw, Oklahoma, team. He pitched and I played shortstop,” he recalled. “Those games are the most cherished of my life. Bigger than any World Series. Why? Because we played together, and I watched Dad’s faith in action.”

“He was never angry. He was always patient. He was unhappy when anybody made an error, even on the opposing team. He didn’t try to outshine everybody else. He just tried to shine in himself,” Mantle added.

In addition, Movieguide® previously reported on Hugh Jackson’s tribute to his late father:

“In the early hours of Father’s Day (AU), my Dad peacefully passed away,” the X-MEN star shared to Instagram on Sept. 6. “And whilst there is deep sadness, I am filled with such gratitude and love. My Dad was, in a word, extraordinary. He devoted his life to his family, his work and his faith.”

Jackman added: “I pray he is now at peace with God.”

… “It’s always about the family,” he shared during a 2012 interview with 60 Minutes. “It’s always, ‘How’s [wife] Deb?’ It’s not about work and I think that’s him living with, probably some of his regrets and feelings of maybe he… at the wrong time put too much into his career and he doesn’t want me to make that mistake. And so, in his gentle way, he always reminds me that this is the most important thing.”
