Will Rachel Zegler’s Homage to Original SNOW WHITE Actress Save Live-Action Version?
By Movieguide® Contributor
As the live-action remake of SNOW WHITE nears it theatrical debut, lead actress Rachel Zegler paid tribute to the original Snow White actress through a replica costume.
“Just had to pay homage to the original Snow White, miss Adriana Caselotti, to whom I owe everything❤️,” Zegler wrote in an Instagram post where she shared photos of herself alongside Caselotti, posing in similar positions while weaning a period costume.
Casoletti voiced Snow White in Walt Disney’s original 1937 animated feature film. The live-action remake of the movie hits theaters on March 21, starring Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen.

Despite a reverence for the original Snow White actress, Zegler has previously voiced her disdain for the original movie, arguing that it is “extremely dated” and promoted harmful ideals.
“I just mean that it’s no longer 1937,” Zegler said in 2023. “[Snow White’s] not going out to be saved by the prince and she’s not going to go dreaming about true love. She’s dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be and the leader that her late father told her that she could be if she was fearless, fair, brave and true.”
These comments received intense backlash from many fans who enjoy the fairy tale story. Furthermore, many believed these comments were made largely due to Disney’s focus on its liberal agenda, which it was heavily pushing during the time. Though the company has since started to roll back these ideals, fans are nervous about the changes that may have been make to the classic Snow White story.
Zegler’s comments aren’t the only time the movie was marred in controversy. In early 2024, actor Peter Dinklage criticized the movie for the harmful stereotypes it promoted about people with dwarfism, despite the movie promoting itself as being an inclusive and progressive story.
“Literally no offense to anything, but I was sort of taken aback,” Dinklage told Marc Maron while on his podcast. “They were very proud to cast a Latino actress as Snow White, but you’re still telling the story of SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS. Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there.”
It will be interesting to see how fans respond to the movie once it hits theaters and if any changes made will be celebrated or will be seen as Disney going too far, yet again.
