The iconic 1980s character full of color, RAINBOW BRITE, is about to make a comeback.

“Rainbow Brite is getting a remix from Crayola Studios and Hallmark, which are teaming to develop a new TV series and feature film inspired by the 1980s children’s franchise,” Variety reported Oct. 14.

PEOPLE shared the show’s synopsis: “Rainbow Brite, a friend, hero, role model and creative inspiration who brings all the colors of the rainbow to the universe, is transported to a dark and gloomy place with a mission to bring color, light and happiness to the world.”

Neal H Moritz and Toby Ascher, who both produced SONIC THE HEDGEHOG and FAST & FURIOUS, will create the movie. Meanwhile, Cake Entertainment is working on the series with a focus on modern tastes and themes of “friendship, teamwork and the power of color and optimism to overcome darkness and negativity.”

“Introduced by Hallmark Cards in 1984, the original ‘Rainbow Brite’ animated series followed a young girl named Wisp who is transported into a dull and desolate land and must bring color to the fictional world. After she locates the Color Belt and rescues the Color Kids from the King of Shadows, Wisp is renamed Rainbow Brite as she embarks on her vibrant adventure,” PEOPLE said.

“The cartoon show was followed by a theatrical movie, ‘Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer,’ which was released by Warner Bros. in 1985,” PEOPLE reported. “In 2014, the series was rebooted with a three-part miniseries released on Hallmark’s streaming service, Feeln.”

Crayola will license and merchandise the rebooted RAINBOW BRITE franchise.

“In this milestone year for Rainbow Brite we are thrilled to be working with Crayola Studios, Cake and Original Film on this vivid reimagining of the beloved brand,” said Sabrina Wiewel, EVP and chief culture and strategy officer at Hallmark. “It has proved its appeal over the past 40 years and we can’t wait to strengthen connections with loyal fans and introduce a new generation to the dazzling world of color and imagination.”

“The Rainbow Brite news comes on the heels of announcements of other movies based on ’80s and ‘90s nostalgia. Lily Collins is set to star in a Polly Pocket movie, while Daniel dKaluuya is attached to a Barney film,” PEOPLE said.

A new animated show about Barney, BARNEY’S WORLD, actually just released on Monday. Its launch marks 14 years since the last Barney project ended.

Movieguide® reported:

The series will contain 52 11-minute episodes. Jonathan Langdon will star as the loveable purple dinosaur. Joining him are Bryn McAuley who will play Baby Bop, Jonathan Tan as Billy, Jayd Deroché as David, Diana Tsoy as Mel and Ella Paciocco as Vivie.

“Through action-packed, music-filled adventures together, Barney helps the kids and audiences explore big preschool emotions, showing them how to love themselves, others, and their communities. While BARNEY’S WORLD was developed for preschoolers, viewers of all ages will feel nostalgic singing along with Barney and his friends again,” a press release describes. “Today’s parents, many of whom grew up with the lovable dinosaur, can now create memories with their own children as they experience this new take on a beloved classic.”
