R&B Star Shares Priority for Family: Love and Serve God
By Movieguide® Contributor
R&B star Ciara is sharing which virtues she tries to instill in her four kids.
“I always want my girls to feel valued, know that they can create their own self-worth, they’re in control of themselves and where they can in life,” the singer told Parents this month. “I want my girls to know that they’re not limited by their gender or the color of their skin.”
She knows that girls — and particularly girls of color — face a lot of setbacks. She wants her daughters to know how to handle them.
“I need to remind my girls to know when you are in the full essence of your honey and your sweetness, but also being firm and clear, you can make a lot happen in that space,” said Ciara. “When you’re doing things that people haven’t seen or don’t necessarily think is the way, you’re going to always feel that resistance and opposition. I’ve always chosen the path of encouragement when I’ve been told ‘no’ or when someone says it won’t work — since I was a little girl.”
She looks to the example her father set for her and the example her husband, NFL star Russell Wilson, sets.
“I’m so grateful for the love that’s in my household, how my husband loves me and how he loves all of our children, and especially how he loves our girls. I’m a daddy’s girl, so my dad’s love was incredibly valuable for me,” she shared, adding that she wants her sons to serve, love God and care for women the way their dad does.

In 2015, Ciara taught her then-1-year-old son, Future, to give praise to God.
“The other day we were saying, ‘Thank you, Jesus’ and I would say, ‘Say, thank you!’ And he would say, ‘Tank you!’ I’d say, ‘Je-sus’ and he’d say, ‘Yee-yus,'” the singer told PEOPLE. “It is so sweet!”
Wilson started dating Ciara after she separated from Future, the rapper. Ciara’s son, Future, was under a year old at the time.
“When I walked in the room and I saw, you know, little Future — he’s nine months at the time or whatever — he crawls in my lap and it was like, you know, this is going to be my responsibility,” Wilson recalled. “I remember leaving that night…and God said, saying to me, ‘Raising this child it’s going to be your responsibility.”
“I think [it was] scary just in the sense of — not scary — but it was more so of an opportunity. Like, ‘Okay God, this is what you want me to do? This is, you know, stepping in to raise, you know, a child with C?’ And this and that and realizing that, okay God, like I know she’s the one for me but also, I’m going to take this responsibility,” Wilson said, adding that he even views it as a “gift.”
Ciara said previously that she hands over her plans to God.
“God knows everything that’s to come in the future, and I think it’s best to let him keep taking control of things,” she said. “Life is sweet, and I’m very thankful for all the great things happening in my life. I’m very happy.”
