REACHER Renewed for Season 4

REACHER Renewed for Season 4

By Movieguide® Contributor

Before Season 3 of REACHER has even hit audiences, Amazon Prime Video has renewed the show for a fourth season.

“REACHER has become a phenomenon that continues to resonate with our global customers beyond our wildest expectations and we are thrilled to bring the series back for an additional season,” said Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon MGM Studios. “We are looking forward to more action and adventure from the immensely talented team behind the series including Nick Santora, Alan Ritchson, Lee Child, Skydance and CBS Studios.”

REACHER has been one of Prime Video’s most successful original series. Despite releasing in December, Season 2 of the show was the most-viewed series on the platform in 2023. The series is based on the best-selling Jack Reacher book series created by Lee Child — who serves as an executive producer on the show.

Amazon recently announced a spinoff series is also in the works, following Francis Neagley who is portrayed by Maria Sten. Though Neagley is a minor character in the book series, she has been a major player on the show. The first season, for example, was based on the book The Killing Floor, in which Neagley does not appear, though she is featured multiple times on the show. Season 3 is also based on a book Neagley is absent from, but she will be heavily involved in the upcoming season.

While REACHER is largely fueled by violence and excesses, with most episodes receiving a -2 rating from Movieguide®, Alan Ritchson, who plays Jack Reacher, is a strong Christian who believes God can reach people through every type of media.

“I love playing Reacher. I love telling this story. I love playing a character who creates a kind of moral ambiguity that we should struggle against as we consider whether or not what he’s doing is good all the time or morally right,” Ritchson explained after receiving criticism about the role.

“A lot of people, supposed Christians especially, criticize me for playing Reacher as if the only TV that should exist is seeing people silently folding their hands in the pew of a church. I mean, what kinds of stories are we supposed to tell?” he continued. “If we look at scripture, what do you find? You see a thousand years of an infinitely holy God holding tension with human beings as He tells the story of who He is.”

“[God] reveals who He is through an imperfect people, so we get stories of paganism and war and bloodshed and ghost stories, mysticism,” Ritchson added. “We see miracles and magic; we see life and resurrection and death; and we see this incredible canvas where God is completely unafraid to tell the story of who He is through less than morally ambiguous characters: through pure evil sometimes.”

The cast of REACHER has grown for Season 3 as Brian Tee, Johnny Berchtold, Roberto Montesinos and Daniel David Stewart land roles on the show.

Tee joins as Quinn, a “physically imposing and intimidating” lieutenant colonel Reacher investigated in the past. Berchtold will play Richard Beck, “a college student who lost his mother when he was very young and [is] the son of businessman Zachary Beck.”  Montesinons joins as Guillermo Villanueva, “a DEA agent on the verge of retirement.” And, finally, Stewart will play Steven Elliot, “a rookie DEA agent who is fresh-faced and new to the job.”

The upcoming season will follow the plot of “Persuader,” the seventh book in Lee Child’s “Reacher” series. The high-level plot follows Jack Reacher as he goes undercover to rescue an informant from a foe from his past.
