Last week, popular video game platform Roblox released a new feature that allows parents to block certain people from their child’s Roblox account, along with other safety features.

“Today, we’re introducing enhanced parental controls that provide greater visibility and management options—enabling parents to block specific users and experiences, and access screen time insights,” the company wrote on X.

Senior product manager for Roblox, Dina Lamdany, told Parents, “We think about safety really as this ongoing process because our technology is evolving, but also because we’re learning more and more over time about what parents and kids need.”

Larry Magid, CEO of ConnectSafely and a “key partner” for Roblox safety, explained that these tools — which allow parents to monitor how much time their child spends on Roblox and block specific friends and Roblox experiences — “enables parents to better support their children’s safe use of the platform.”

“Roblox has consistently provided parents with tools that enable their children to enjoy the platform, while helping protect them against online risks. These new friend- and experience-blocking tools provide parents with even more ways to help ensure their children are using it safely. Safety, fun, and adventure are not mutually exclusive,” he added.

In addition to those safety updates to parental controls, Roblox has also updated its “Safety Center to serve as a hub for safety resources, tools, and policies for users and parents alike. Here, users can find our latest Community Standards,” Matt Kaufman, Roblox’s Chief Safety Officer, wrote in the press release.

These safety updates come just one month after Roblox and Discord were sued for alleged child abuse.

A lawsuit filed by the State Superior Court in San Mateo County, California, alleges that a then 13-year-old child was sexually exploited by a “dangerous child predator — one who now faces criminal charges for what he has done” — while on the platforms.

It’s critical that platforms like Roblox give parents more control over what their children can access on the platform as instances of cyberbullying, online predators and harassment proliferate.

“Setting boundaries, which means making key decisions, and really setting limits, defining kind of the edges of our kid’s experience, is just as important to cultivating a strong relationship with a kid, as is validating their feelings when they’re upset,” clinical psychologist Dr. Becky Kennedy said.

“Kids don’t want to be the pilot of the plane — they know they shouldn’t be the pilot of the plane,” she added. “And if there are no boundaries, kids get more and more out of control because, inherently, they feel like no one is offering them the containment they need to feel safe and to develop.”

If your children use any online platforms, set the proper boundaries to help ensure they remain safe.
