Colton Dixon Reveals Roots to his Music: ‘It’s A Crazy Story’

In a recent interview with The Washington Times, Colton Dixon talked about the influence of God and others in his life that brought him to where he is today.

Dixon grew up in a Christian home and started taking piano lessons at 7 or 8 years old. His music teacher was constantly pushing him, and at a piano recital when he was 13 the teacher placed a microphone in front of him with the piano and told him to sing.

“I get out there and sing, and whether it was good or not was beside the point. The point is, man, I really just feel like I encountered Holy Spirit for the first time. And He just kind of showed me that music was going to be a tool in my life to reach people,” said Dixon. “Of course I had no idea what that was going to look like, had zero inclination that he would have taken me from there to where I am today.”

“I owe my sister a lot of credit,” stated Dixon.

After that Dixon was given a chance to try out for the show AMERICAN IDOL when his sister was trying out. His family had watched AMERICAN IDOL since they were both young and his sister really wanted to go. Dixon followed her to the stage for moral support for his sister until his sister told him to go in and perform.

Dixon reports his sister encouraged him by saying something similar to, “This is so dumb you’re already here [at AMERICAN IDOL], why would you not just sing? The worst they could say is no and then you’ll know.” Because of his sister’s encouragement, Dixon tried out and they both made it, they did well but Dixon went on longer.

Dixon commented that God used his decision to say yes to AMERICAN IDOL to drastically shape and change his life. One example, is that Dixon met his current wife in He met his future wife in California as a result of going on AMERICAN IDOL.

Dixon remains thankful for his upbringing and moral compass instilled in him, and the consistent godly support of the people around him. These were invaluable in helping him deal with the sudden fame he gained.

Movieguide® previously reported on Dixon’s faith:

In 2017, Dixon lost his record label, and his faith was tested.

“The lies of the enemy told me I was not good enough for a record label, but a comment from my wife, Annie, made all the difference and turned everything around,” Dixon shared on the Charisma Podcast Network.

Dixon opened up about how he and his wife relied on their faith in Jesus Christ, prayer, and God’s Word on “Living in the Light with Dr. Kristi Lemley.”

“I was dropped by my label, which is the blunt way to put it, and as a musician, it kind of feels like you lose your job,” Dixon confessed. “When your identity is wrapped up in career, and in the security of a record label, it comes as a very big blow. It’s funny when you put out a record called ‘Identity,’ and then you have to actually practice what you preach later, it’s like, ‘Oh, I was doing what I said you shouldn’t do.’”

Dixon said that he relied on his faith and the support of his wife during the challenging time.

“I’m thankful for my wife. She said something that was just really going to change the game for both her and I. She said, ‘Man, what if we’re looking at this all wrong, what if this isn’t a setback? But what if this is God just setting you up for the next chapter?’ and I was like that would make a really good message,” Dixon recalled.
