New Orleans Saints LB Demario Davis Puts Faith, Family over Football

New Orleans Saints linebacker keeps his focus on God despite being sidelined due to a recent injury.
“Since August 5th, the New Orleans Saints have been without arguably the best player on their entire team in linebacker extraordinaire, Demario Davis. The stud defender has been sidelined with a calf injury, but has since returned to the practice field, albeit in a limited capacity,” Who Dat Dish reported.
Whether facing success or injury, Davis puts God first.
“I’m a tank filling guy, so I like to fill up my tanks. I need a full tank spiritually. I need a full tank mentally. I need a full tank physically. When my tank is full, I’m ready to take on that adversity,” Davis said in a photo shared by the NFL’s Instagram.
Davis’ journey to the NFL began on the Arkansas State football team. There, he was a standout linebacker and earned multiple honors during his college career.
After college, Davis was selected by the New York Jets in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft (77th overall). He played for the New York Jets from 2012 to 2015, establishing himself as a key contributor on defense.
In 2016, he signed with the Cleveland Browns as a free agent. However, in a unique move, Davis was traded back to the New York Jets during the same offseason in a player-for-player trade involving safety Calvin Pryor. Davis continued to be a reliable and impactful linebacker for the Jets, known for his tackling ability and leadership on and off the field.
In 2018, he signed a three-year contract with the New Orleans Saints. During his time with the Saints, he has emerged as a fan favorite and one of the team’s defensive leaders.
Davis is known for his high level of play, versatility and strong presence in the locker room. Many also recognize his distinctive “Man of God” headband, which he wears during games as a personal expression of his faith.
Despite his successful football career, his priority is his family and faith.
In a recent Instagram photo with his family, Davis wrote, “Psalm 103:17-18, ‘But the steadfast love of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him, and his righteousness to children’s children, to those who keep his covenant and remember to do his commandments.’”
Davis and his wife, Tamela, also host a podcast called “Tea with Tamela.”
Movieguide® previously reported on Davis’ faith:
However, Davis—outspoken about his Christian faith—turned to prayer amid adversity on the field.
“I remember asking God, ‘Why am I going through this again?’ Because at least in my relationship with God, if I feel like I’m going through the same thing, there’s something I didn’t learn the first time,” he said on an episode of the Sports Spectrum podcast. “So was there something I didn’t learn in my year in Cleveland or something I didn’t learn in my years in New York?”…
“What He showed me was, ‘You kind of have two of the three. You have the courage to change the things you can control and you have the wisdom to know the difference, but you don’t have peace when things aren’t in your control, and we need to work on that,” Davis explained on the podcast. “And I was like, ‘Wow, here I am in a situation that’s outside my control (the losing streak) and I need to have peace and faith in You. Really there’s nothing I can do. I’m playing as best as I can play; I feel like I’m leading the defense as best I can. But there’s injuries going on, there’s front-office decisions — things that are outside my control, that I can do nothing about — when I felt like we were going to have a great season.’ And I was like, ‘OK, I can feel the anxiety that’s there.’”
