By Movieguide® Contributor
Patrick Renna, known for his role as Ham from THE SANDLOT, wants to teach kids about life and baseball through his new book, “
“First of all, for sure having kids — because reading books and finding the right books and the messages and things like that are really important with younger kids and all the way into the double digits and early teens,” Renna told PEOPLE of why he decided to start writing.
“Combining lessons in life with lessons in baseball was a lot of fun to do,” he added. “It’s amazing how similar it is to life and how, if you have a good head on your shoulders or you have a good outlook on sports, that can transfer over into life.”

“Featuring anecdotes from Patrick Renna’s experience playing THE SANDLOT character Hamilton Porter, this little slugger’s guide encourages readers young and old to ‘keep swinging’ and ‘find a glove that fits’ so that they can hit home runs on and off the field. Full of witty quips, wisdom, and stories about unforgettable moments throughout baseball history, this gift book is sure to be a favorite for all fans of America’s greatest pastime,” a summary of the book reads.
At first, Renna was a bit hesitant to write a children’s book because he felt he wasn’t a writer.
“My first instinct was, ‘I’m not a writer. No, I’m sorry.'” But, ultimately, Renna is “really glad I did it and working with him and that team was amazing,” he said of his publishing team.
He posted a funny clip promoting the book a few months ago, showing him procrastinating and hitting writer’s block until a light bulb goes off, and he whips out a draft.
“A little something for parents so the bedtime routine doesn’t go extra innings,” he quipped in the caption.
