Shannon Bream Talks ‘Value of Truth’ with Author Mitch Albom

By Movieguide® Contributor

Best-selling author Mitch Albom is opening up about what pushed him to write his latest novel, “The Little Liar.”

“I didn’t have any idea when I wrote it that it would become this timely,” he said during an appearance on Shannon Bream’s “Livin’ the Bream” podcast.

A synopsis of “The Little Liar” calls the book “a powerful novel of hope and forgiveness that moves from a coastal Greek city during WWII to America in the golden age of Hollywood, as the intertwined lives of three young survivors are forever changed by the perils of deception and the grace of redemption.”

Albom continued, “I wanted to write a book about truth, and the value of truth, and the preciousness of it, and what happens when we lie, and the ramifications of even a single lie. I couldn’t think of a time in history when lies were more prevalent, or more damaging, than during WWII — particularly during the Holocaust and what the Nazis did.”

He explained that when he was growing up, there were still people around who had experienced the Holocaust firsthand. Today, there are few survivors left, which is why Albom felt the need to continue telling their story.

“It’s very, very important to have stories like this,” he said. “It’s one of the reasons I thought it was important, at least once in my career, to write a story that would contribute to the idea of never forgetting what took place.”

Albom spoke further about the importance of the truth in an interview with Deseret News.

“I think inside all of us, we know what the truth is. And we know how it feels when we tell the truth and how it feels different when we tell a lie, even if we tell little lies,” the author explained. “At this time in our history, we need to understand that the little lies lead to bigger lies and big lies lead to really big lies. And that the world is in the balance with the way we are going to acknowledge truth in our lives. Our futures, our kids’ futures, hang in the balance on that question.”

Movieguide® previously reported on “The Little Liar”:

Albom has just released a new book called “The Little Liar.”

“I wanted to write a story that showed the lies that we tell in our lives and how we spend much of our lives trying to get forgiveness for the lies that we tell,” he said in an interview with Deseret News. “So I thought I had a book that would be meaningful to people no matter what.”
