Singer Kelly Rowland Shares Her Prayer for Sons

By Movieguide® Contributor

Singer Kelly Rowland reflected on the joys and struggles of parenting in a recent interview with Kindred by Parents.

“I just want to get this right,” she told the outlet. “I want to really be a part of bringing some really amazing young men forth into the world. That was my only prayer.”

“I don’t know why I’m emotional, but my only prayer was to have really great young Black men in this world who were sure of themselves and didn’t have to be told who they were. I really cared about that because the narrative is tough as it is,” she continued.

Rowland shares sons Noah, 2, and Titan, 8, with her husband Tim Weatherspoon.

The musician emphasized the importance of fostering and celebrating children and their interests.

“If we’re gonna grow our kids, like, let’s be lost in their interests and the things that bring them joy,” she said. “Let’s have joy with them about it.”

“I’ll sit out here and watch him do basketball or do whatever it is that he loves so much because I want him to know that I see it. It’s wonderful. It’s worth celebrating. You’re worth celebrating. Your try is worth celebrating. I love all that is you,” Rowland added.

Her faith informs her parenting. Rowland shared how after her son Titian was upset, she helped him visualize “Footprints in the Sand” by Mary Stevenson.

Per Parents, “Titan confirmed that he could see his own footprints and God’s, the expanse of the sky and the blue of the ocean in his mind’s eye.”

I said, ‘That’s God next to you at all times. That’s how close he is. You saw how big the ocean was? How big the sky was?’ I was like, ‘That’s God. He’s always next to us,’” said Rowland.

The musician admitted that parenting is hard and told Kindred that she focuses on grace.

“I hate to mess up. But I’m literally giving myself grace. I’m learning that maybe all of the decisions that my mom made were not the greatest decisions. And I’m trying to change that this generation,” she said.

“It’s okay to ask for help or advice,” Rowland said previously. “I was very nervous about my level of patience prior to being a mom. It’s an essential, and you have to have it with kids, especially as they’re figuring everything out.”

“I also have to have patience with myself to know that I won’t know everything every single time, and that I have to give myself grace,” she explained.

Movieguide® previously reported on Rowland’s faith:

Grammy Award-winning singer Kelly Rowland recently shared how her faith in God has helped her through every stage of life—from her time in Destiny’s Child and now as a solo artist and mother.

“I believe in God, I believe in Jesus, I believe in faith more than I do religion,” Rowland told Kirk Franklin on his GOOD WORKS podcast. “It’s such a personal walk … and it’s carried me.”

Rowland continued: “It’s made me the woman that I am. It’s making me the mother that I am. It’s continuing to make me the woman that I am. It’s teaching me how to be a wife. It’s continuously stretching me.”

Rowland encountered many struggles in the harsh reality of the entertainment industry. However, she feels like the Lord sustained and protected her through many “uncomfortable positions” she encountered.
