College Soccer Star Shares Just How Far She’d Go to ‘Speak About Jesus’
By Movieguide® Contributor
University of New Mexico soccer star Courtney Fernau wants to share Jesus, no matter the cost.
One of the defining moments in her soccer career came when she tore her ACL — twice.
But despite the painful recovery from each tear, Fernau would do it all over again.
“If I had to go through two ACLs again to be able to have the opportunity to be able to speak about Jesus, I would,” she said on Sports Spectrum’s “What’s Up” podcast. “They were long recoveries; they were painful mentally, physically, and emotionally, but I would do it again for what Jesus has used it for. And used it for his glory ultimately.”
When asked what her favorite part of the season has been, Fernau mentioned her team being 5-1. But her favorite part is something much more lasting.
“I’d say this season so far — we actually had a young adult night on Wednesday this week at the local church we all go to, and we had, I think, 14 teammates in total come to that night. Our roster is 34,” she said. “But I think 14 is the most teammates that have ever come to adult nights, so I’d say it just feels like there’s a revival happening in Albuquerque. On my team me and one of my best friends have been talking about it how it’s just so, seriously so encouraging to see our teammates come and show the willingness and just show the curiosity to know more about Jesus.”
Fernau played in her senior sendoff game just a few weeks ago, and in a recent Instagram post, she thanked God for how he’s used soccer in her life.
“Truly a story only God could write!” she posted on Instagram. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 2 Timothy 4:7.”
I have officially closed the 16 year chapter of soccer in my life! I truly have no words but gratitude. This journey is a clear testament to God’s never ending love and ongoing work in my life through all the highs and lows. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Thank you UNM, thank you soccer, and thank you Jesus!
Will always be that little girl who fell in love with soccer at heart. All love forever! #9 officially signing off
