SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 4 in the Works
By Movieguide® Contributor
The third installment of the SONIC THE HEDGEHOG series just dropped in theaters, and Paramount already has a fourth movie in the works.
While little has been shared about SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 4, Paramount is eyeing a release for the movie in the spring of 2027. The plot for the fourth movie was also slightly teased with a post-credit scene when Amy Rose — a long-storied member of the Sonic universe and Sonic’s girlfriend — appears and saves Sonic from a group of baddies.
Movieguide®’s review for SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3 reads:
Thus, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3 has a strong moral, redemptive worldview. It overtly promotes family, adoption, love, sacrifice, making good choices, and doing the right thing. Also, at one point, Dr. Robotnik surprisingly says, “Vaya con Dios” (the famous Spanish phrase is translated correctly as “Go with God”). The movie also has a heartfelt spiritual metaphor about light in a line of dialogue that’s repeated. The line occurs first when Shadow and Maria are admiring all the stars in the sky. Some of those stars have died, Maria says, but their light still shines.

“With 30-plus years of characters in the SONIC library, it’s always so exciting to tease new characters at the end of each film,” director Jeff Fowler told The Hollywood Reporter. “Bringing new characters can really push us in new directions, and it is very exciting. But, right now, we’re just focused on the release of this third movie, and we’re hoping it will be received well. We’ll see where things go from there.”
With dozens of recognizable characters within the SONIC universe, the filmmakers have done an excellent job of slowly introducing them, rather than including too many all at once. Sonic and Dr. Robotnik were the only two characters from the universe in the first movie, while Tails and Knuckles were added for the second. To further flesh out the story, Knuckles got his own mini-series on Paramount+, giving fans even more time to get to know his character. Finally, the third movie introduced Shadow and Ivo Robotnik, bringing the total number of characters from the SONIC Universe to six.
The SONIC series has also done an excellent job of focusing on quality over quantity, releasing roughly one new piece of content every year. This has greatly contributed to the franchise’s commercial success and allowed it to attract major talent such as Idris Elba and Keanu Reeves, adding on the big names included from the start, such as Jim Carrey and James Marsden.
