SOUND OF FREEDOM Surpasses Oscar Winner’s Box Office Take

By Movieguide® Contributor

SOUND OF FREEDOM has reached a new box office milestone, overtaking Academy Award-winner GOOD WILL HUNTING’s success at theaters.

The Oscar-winning movie GOOD WILL HUNTING, widely viewed as one of the greatest movies of all time, earned roughly $225 million at the box office when it was released in 1997. SOUND OF FREEDOM surpassed that milestone, with $230 million currently accrued since its release on July 4.

SOUND OF FREEDOM has been the biggest sleeper hit in recent memory. It was originally slated for a limited run at a small number of theaters, but its unexpected success prompted a widespread national release and led to an international run as well.

Movieguide® reported that the movie was initially slated for 2,634 theaters during its first weekend but ended up landing in 3,411.

“Everyone in the industry knows that films are generally supposed to lose screens week-over-week, not add them. And yet, the incredible word-of-mouth driving SOUND OF FREEDOM continues to spread. In response, we are continuing to expand our offering in theaters this weekend,” Brandon Purdie, Angel Studios Head of Theatrical, said in a statement. “Our theatrical partners have stepped up in a huge way to allow for more people to see the film.”

The movie has held its own against more mainstream franchises, such as Tom Cruise-led MISSION IMPOSSIBLE and the latest INDIANA JONES, both of which were in theaters at the same time as SOUND OF FREEDOM.

Part of Movieguide®’s review for SOUND OF FREEDOM reads:

SOUND OF FREEDOM is gripping and heartbreaking, but hope-giving. The movie sheds light on the need for strong people to stand up for God’s children around the world who are caught in the vicious, abusive system of sex trafficking. SOUND OF FREEDOM has a strong Christian, moral worldview that promotes sacrifice and the message that “God’s children are not for sale.” MOVIEGUIDE® advises strong and extreme caution for the movie’s mature subject matter, implied and depicted violence, and abuse of children.

With its theater run coming to a close, Angel Studios recently revealed the movie’s release to home entertainment, becoming available to some as early as October 13.

Movieguide® previously reported:

The launch to home entertainment will begin with an exclusive viewing window for the Angel Guild beginning on October 13 through the Angel Studios app.

The movie will become available for digital purchase on November 3, followed by a DVD and Blu-ray release on November 14. Digital rental of the movie will start on December 15.

“The Angel Guild selected and made SOUND OF FREEDOM so successful theatrically. They decide what projects are green-lit and are presented to audiences,” Jared Geesey, Chief Distribution Officer at Angel Studios, said in a statement. “We are so honored to give them exclusive early access to this film prior to its wider release through the world’s leading digital platforms and retailers.”
