Sterling K. Brown might be a famous actor, but he has the same problems any parent of a teenager does.

“Teenage boys, I don’t know if they’re different than [teenage] girls. I have nothing to compare it to except for THIS IS US,” he told Parade, referring to the hit drama he starred in. “But I say this. He has a tendency to [be] very close to the vest, my oldest son.”

Brown continued, “I want to give him his privacy and his autonomy, but I need to let him know that like, your dad cares about every facet of your life, so if and when you want to share with me, you can share whatever you want with your boy.”

Other than that, the actor says he doesn’t face too many challenges when it comes to parenting Andrew, 13.

“The kid makes straight As. He’s a great athlete. He plays soccer like nobody’s business. And he’s a great friend. The people that he’s close to, he is ride or die,” Brown shared. “So I have no real stories to report with regards to raising a teenager other than I just want him to talk to me more.”

Brown also shares son Amaré, 9, with wife Ryan Michelle Bathé. The couple spoke about their parenting philosophy in a 2024 interview with PEOPLE.

“There’s this idea I think that both of us agree on, most of the time, is that they’re not to be molded into versions of us. That they kind of are who they are when they come to you,” Brown explained. “And we’re just trying to shepherd them to become the best version of who they already are, right?”

Bathé added, “A lot of things about parenting we got settled and agreed on before the children came, so whatever big issues we may or may not have had, we had hashed them out. There were not a lot of surprises in terms of, ‘Oh, this is the kind of parent Sterling is,’ or, ‘This is the kind of parent Ryan is.’”

Brown always keeps his sons in mind, even when choosing acting roles. He recently starred in ATLAS, a sci-fi adventure story, and says his youngest son factored into the choice.

“I wanted to do something that my 8-year-old son could watch because he always complains about not being able to watch any of the stuff that I do,” the actor shared
