Steve-O Drops Bill Maher’s Podcast After Comedian Refuses to Respect His Sobriety

Actor Steve-O—Stephen Glover—backed out of comedian Bill Maher’s “Club Random” podcast after the host refused to refrain from smoking marijuana during the interview.
“I found it kind of upsetting when the Bill Maher podcast reached out, and he smokes pot the whole time while he interviews people,” Glover said. “I said I’d happily go on there, but while I’m on, out of respect for my sobriety, could he refrain from smoking pot?”
“He said no and that’s a dealbreaker,” Glover added.
After decades of partying and hard drugs, Glover entered rehab in the early 2000s with the guidance of his friends. His long-lasting sobriety is one of the things he is most proud of, and he works hard to keep himself from being in situations where he would be tempted to relapse.
“I’m a clean and sober guy,” he said on his “Wild Ride!” podcast. “It’s very important that I maintain my sobriety. It’s approaching 16 years. I am about to be sweet 16. Really, there’s nothing I value more than my sobriety. There’s nothing more that I protect than my recovery.”
Glover was especially offended by Maher, given that he has appeared on other similar podcasts in the past where the hosts were happy to respect his sobriety and refrain from smoking.
“Mike Tysons’s podcast is called ‘Hotboxin.’ Be real! All of these prolific potheads, I’ve been on their shows and it wasn’t so important to them to blow marijuana smoke in my face. But for Bill Maher, it was a dealbreaker,” Glover said.
To add insult to injury, Maher has recorded episodes in the past in which he chose not to smoke. His episode with musician Sheryl Crow, for example, had zero smoking in it, although he jokingly asked if he could hold a blunt.
Movieguide® previously reported on Maher’s podcast:
While appearing on Bill Maher’s podcast, comedian Chris Distefano professed his faith and challenged the host to read A Case for Christ.
“I believe in Jesus, by the way,” Distefano said on the January 21st episode of the “Real Time” podcast, perFaithwire. “The factual evidence that [Christ] existed is kind of overwhelming.”
Distefano revealed his background with faith began when he was a child as he grew up going to Catholic school. However, he never connected with the Bible and did not take his faith too seriously until recently when he read Lee Strobel’s A Case for Christ.
The book offers an extremely deep look into the historical evidence of the existence of Jesus, His miracles, His death and resurrection, and the spread of the early church. Strobel wrote the book from the perspective of a skeptic as he was not a believer until the evidence he accrued to write the book convinced him.
