Summer Blockbusters Battle for IMAX Spots

As major summer releases like Tom Cruise’s new movie, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7, and director Christopher Nolan’s OPPENHEIMER, head to theaters, only one can dominate IMAX screens.

“Paramount’s ‘MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7’ is only playing on IMAX screens for one week…before it has to relinquish all of its show times to ‘OPPENHEIMER,’” Variety says.

Compared to other premium large format (PLF) screens, IMAX has limited flexibility when it comes to movie schedules.

Puck reported that Cruise scrambled to get more PLF screen coverage for MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 7 after the bump by OPPENHEIMER. Cruise even asked competitors to change their release dates.

“I feel sad in a way we can’t accommodate all of them. I know ‘MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE’ is going to be a really big movie,” Rich Gelfond, IMAX’s CEO, says.

However, Gelfond also expresses some blatant favoritism for Christopher Nolan’s OPPENHEIMER: “Nolan has a special place in Imax’s heart because he uses our cameras and promotes us. It’s not a matter of us saying which we can make more money on. I would hope after ‘OPPENHEIMER’S’ run, we can bring back ‘MISSION.’”

Cruise continues to advocate for and promote MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7, which will release on July 12th, and recently shared a behind-the-scenes reel of some difficult stunt work in Rome:
