Texas QB Quinn Ewers Plays to ‘Please Jesus,’ Not People
By Movieguide® Contributor
University of Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers is taking this season in stride.
The No. 1 ranked Longhorns lost this past weekend to the No. 5 ranked Georgia Bulldogs in a 30-15 upset.
According to ESPN, “Georgia’s defense sacked Texas’ quarterbacks seven times and had 10 tackles for loss. The Longhorns finished with 259 yards of offense, including 29 rushing. Texas went 2-for-15 on third down and 1-for-5 on fourth.”
Luckily for Ewers, his identity isn’t in his performance on the field. It’s in the Lord.
“I’m not trying to please people who breathe one breath at a time. I’m just trying to please Jesus,” Ewers told the Michigan Daily. “He controls all breaths. When you truly believe that, when you truly know that, I think I allow myself to fully play clear-minded.”
Ewers first played at Ohio State, “backing up C.J. Stroud at Ohio State, and transferred back to his home state before the 2022 season. There, he was rejuvenated in his faith…” Sports Spectrum reported.
“There’s a lot of pressure that comes with this kind of thing,” Ewers wrote to the Player’s Tribune of his recruitment process. “There was already a lot of pressure when I made this decision the first time, and now that I’ve gone through the process again, there might have been even more pressure the second time around.
“Finding a balance between inside and outside expectations has always been challenging for me,” he continued. “On the outside, from the trolls to the people who love you, inviting so many opinions and perspectives into a choice like this is never ideal. And on the inside, I’m always trying to figure out how to balance having a lot of confidence in myself with also wanting to stay as humble as possible in order to see things clearly.”
Ultimately, Ewers “didn’t just choose to go anywhere. I chose a program I truly believe in. I chose to come home.”
