Texas Takes Next Step in Protecting Children From Sexual Predators

A new bill proposed in Texas would make any content that portrays high school-age or younger characters in a sexual way illegal, and possession of such material would be comparable to owning child pornography.

“A person commits an offense if the person knowingly possesses, accesses with intent to view, or promotes obscene visual material containing a depiction that appears to be of a child younger than 18 years of age engaging in [obscene activities], regardless of whether the depiction is an image of an actual child, a cartoon or animation, or an image created using an artificial intelligent application or other computer software,” the bill reads, per Screen Rant.

This bill was introduced to address AI-generated child pornography but would also impact many works that are popular among manga and anime fans, both genres which are notorious for sexualizing characters who appear to be very young. While in many cases, these characters are over the age of 18 — sometimes even being canonically thousands of years old — because they are portrayed as high schoolers or younger, they would be treated as such by the proposed law.

The bill, however, in some instances remains vague about how it can be enforced, making it possible that it would not apply to most manga or anime given that these forms of content provide value — through entertainment — beyond their obscene depictions.

While the bill is yet to be voted upon by the state legislature, it has received strong support from both the house and the senate, offering strong evidence that it will pass into law. While it has many manga and anime fans concerned, limiting the reach of these forms of content will likely have a positive impact beyond their inclusion of obscene acts by child-like characters.

Because anime and manga originate from Asia, many of them strongly promote Eastern religion and expose young viewers to harmful mystic beliefs that they end up adopting. With an overall rise in false religion in America — especially occultism — it is always a win when a form of media spreading these beliefs has its reach cut down.
