‘Thankful To God’: Chip And Joanna Gaines Reflect On 20 Years Together

Chip and Joanna Gaines are reflecting on the “beautiful moment” they’re in during their 20-year marriage.
“Jo and I are in this beautiful moment. We’re evolving into each other,” Chip told PEOPLE. “It’s the second part of our marriage.”
Joanna added, “I would say, as we’re getting older, I’m shifting and I’m more like Chip, and Chip is more like me.”
Part of this new phase of their marriage includes establishing new habits. Joanna is learning to face her fears and embrace emotions. Chip is taking time to relax and cheer on his wife.
“I want to be her biggest cheerleader,” he explained. “I’m like, ‘Hey, you go do whatever. My knees are killing me.’”
Joanna joked that the couple are in their “midlife crisis” but later explained, “We just see life differently now.”
She elaborated on the subject during an episode of the “This Morning Walk” podcast, joking, “I feel like I’m going through a midlife crisis! Aren’t we all.”
“I’m not super emotional — Chip is the emotional one — but I have turned into something he doesn’t understand now. He’s like, ‘You cry all the time,’ and I’m like, ‘I’m just making up for the 20 years that I have been unemotional!'” Joanna laughed. “There’s so much healing in not holding things in…Now I just love crying. It feels good to feel.”

As Joanna Gaines has gotten older, she’s been reflecting on her life and her mindset as a mother.
Gaines shared that previously, she thought, “I’m the mom, I should have the answers.” However, now she understands the importance of being “vulnerable.”
“The older I’ve gotten, I’ve realized the more humanity these kids can see in me, the more we’re going to connect,” Gaines explained.
She continued, “I want them to see the highs and lows, so when they’re feeling anxieties about school or relationships, they know it’s a safe place for them to come to me.”
In an essay penned for the couple’s website, Chip also reflected on the years the couple have spent together.
“Twenty years are behind us now. Those chapters have already been written, and we’ve lived a storied life,” he wrote. “We might’ve wished back then for calmer seas and slower days when we were in the thick of parenting small kids and growing a business alongside them, but now I wouldn’t wish any of it away. I’m so thankful to God for giving us exactly what we’ve had, and for what I know we still have ahead: plenty to build — hand-in-hand.”
