THE BATMAN Sequel Release Delayed to 2027
By Movieguide® Contributor
DC Studios has pushed THE BATMAN sequel’s release date to 2027, delaying it by over a year.
Currently untitled (though previously called THE BATMAN: PART II), “The DC Studios film is expected to go into production in the third quarter of 2025, and is now set for Oct. 1, 2027. THE BATMAN sequel has sported multiple release dates since it was announced in 2022, with the methodical [Matt] Reeves working to perfect the script,” the Hollywood Reporter said.
DC Studios co-chief James Gunn commented on the delay: “Matt is committed to making the best film he possibly can, and no one can accurately guess exactly how long a script will take to write. Once there is a finished script, there is around two years for pre-production, shooting and post-production on big films.”
Since the announcement of the sequel in 2022, the release date has been delayed twice.
IGN said it “was originally set to arrive in theaters in October 2025 and was delayed by a year in March 2024 before this latest delay. If this date stands, it will end up being five years between the world seeing Robert Pattinson become the Dark Knight.”
While some fans criticized Reeves’ slow scriptwriting process, Gunn quickly came to his defense.
“To be fair, a 5 year gap or more is fairly common in sequels,” he wrote on Threads. “7 years between ALIEN and ALIENS. 14 years between INCREDIBLES. 7 years between the first two TERMINATORS. 13 years between AVATARS. 36 years between TOP GUNS. And, of course, 6 years between GUARDIANS VOL 2 and VOL 3.”
The first movie performed well at the box office.
“Reeves’ THE BATMAN was the first fire-breathing theatrical release for Warner Bros. post Covid after implementing a day-and-date release strategy on Max; the movie making $369.3M domestic, $772M WW. The feature spawned a Max series, THE PENGUIN, the third-most-watched HBO or Max debut season around the world,” Deadline reported.
However, if Gunn and Reeves really want THE BATMAN sequel to succeed, they should ditch the profanities that marred the otherwise redemptive first movie.
THE BATMAN takes place in a dark world and is seriously hampered by many strong profanities about Jesus and other foul language. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution. THE BATMAN has lots of intense action violence and two big endings instead of just one. However, it tells an exciting, compelling story that engages viewers. THE BATMAN also has a strong redemptive, morally uplifting worldview where justice, hope, goodness, faith, and redemption overcome vengeance, political corruption and criminal behavior.
