In a recent video, THE CHOSEN creator Dallas Jenkins and Rabbi Jason Sobel discussed the significance of the Garden of Gethsemane and how that has informed future episodes of the hit series.
“Before we produced #TheChosen, we went to Israel to go deeper into the stories we’re telling you,” the video’s caption read. “The meaning and importance of olive trees truly impacted us.”
Jenkins started the clip by saying, “We are sitting in what could be or is nearby or could actually be the spot of the Garden of Gethsemane, one of the most intense passages of scripture in the entire Bible.”
Sobel called the trip “breathtaking,” while Jenkins agreed that it was “overwhelming” to be there.
“It’s not about the actions that took place here. It’s about the heart of what took place here,” Jenkins explained. “Jesus was experiencing heartbreak. This is where the most emotional moment that we’ve ever seen captured in the Bible took place.”
The pair then spoke about the significance of the olive trees that surrounded them and how, to get oil, you have to crush the olives. They drew parallels between crushing the olives to make olive oil and the moments leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion.
“Jesus is surrounded by olives and is being crushed,” Sobel explained.
Jenkins added, “The Garden of Gethsemane is a reminder not only of this amazing story and not only what Jesus went through, but what we should actually go through…when you’re pressing on those olives more than anything else, it brings light,” referring to lamps that burned olive oil.
“The olive is valuable, but the oil is only produced through crushing,” Sobel concluded.
