THE CHOSEN’s Jonathan Roumie says his time playing Jesus has been “a fascinating and surreal experience.”

“I try to play Jesus as being fully present in every moment that He’s in,” he explained in a recent interview with Movieguide®. “He was probably the most present person to walk the earth.”

Roumie also dove into the dynamics of Jesus and Judas’ relationship in Season 5, which will show Judas’ betrayal and Jesus’ subsequent arrest.

“The question that our show plausibly asks [is] ‘What would this dynamic have been like?’ And we know what scripture says, so how do we get from A to B?” the actor asked.

Roumie explained that THE CHOSEN’s cast and crew “[explores] those paths with the gospel in mind, and with the truth of the gospel and the essence of the gospel in mind,” along with the help of a “Biblical consultation staff.”

“That’s part of the joy of doing this show. Just seeing where the road winds,” he concluded. “It’s a fascinating and surreal experience in its totality in that way.”

In a recent interview with CBN, Roumie shared some other ways playing Jesus has impacted his day-to-day life.

“It’s changed my relationship with God in that it has deepened profoundly and made me want to be more like Jesus in my day to day life, and not just to play Him,” he explained. “One of the things that keeps hitting me is you don’t have to play Jesus on TV to be Jesus to the world. And I think that is what we are all called to do as believers.”

The actor elaborated on this in an interview with GOOD MORNING AMERICA.

“It’s been life-changing. It’s been career-changing. It’s been the greatest gift that I’ve been given as not only an actor but as a person, as a man of Faith myself,” Roumie said of the role. “It’s led me deeper into my own faith. And made me want to know and experience how to be a better person on the day-to-day. How can I be a friend, be a better stranger to people that I meet that need my help, or whatever it is? And how can I be a better example of faith in my own life?”

Jonathan Roumie also gave some details about what fans can expect from Season 5’s premiere episodes.

“Season 5 picks up at the start of Holy Week on Palm Sunday,” he explained. “So, Jesus is literally riding into Jerusalem on a donkey with crowds of a mass. They know He’s coming, they’re waving the palm branches, they love Him. They’re ready to worship Him, ready to crown Him king on a Sunday. And then by Friday, He’s nailed to a cross. So, things dramatically changed in the course of those six days or so.”

Roumie added, “Season 5 really explores what those challenges and those struggles and those events actually are.”

THE CHOSEN Part 1 is currently in theaters. Part 2 will premiere April 4 and Part 3 on April 11.
