The Golden Globe Awards Disregard Movies’ Core Audience for Lackluster Show

By Movieguide® Staff

The Golden Globe Awards kicked off 2023’s award season on Tuesday night, allegedly honoring the best of what cinema had to offer in 2022.

However, The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Fienberg said that the awards show is likely to disappoint in viewing numbers once again.

Fienberg claims that it is unclear how the future will pan out for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association event, given that the Globes are now without a network home in NBC due to the end of their contract.

“I felt like the show was hit and miss,” he wrote. “And the ratings? We’ll soon see, but I wouldn’t get my hopes up. All awards shows — and virtually all TV programming aside from football — have had declining viewership in recent years. And the Tuesday night time-slot didn’t exactly set the show up for success.”

As Movieguide® gears up for the Movieguide® Award Gala this February, a closer look at last year’s movies reveals that too often the Golden Globes and the Oscars disregard what the audiences enjoyed most: morally uplifting content.

The common moviegoer feels no need to watch an award show that chooses to ostracize the majority for the sake of appeasing a minority.

For example, of the five nominees in the ‘Best Motion Picture – Drama’ category, the Globes gave the award to Steven Spielberg’s THE FABELMANS, which earned $13.4M at the domestic box office.

This defeated nominees TOP GUN: MAVERICK and ELVIS, which made $718.7M and $151M at the domestic box office, respectively.

Not only did they make exponentially more money, but ELVIS and TOP GUN: MAVERICK contained more uplifting, patriotic or moral content then the FABELMANS, according to Movieguide® reviews.

As Movieguide® reports every year in their Report to the Entertainment Industry, movies that celebrate moral values and uplifting stories fare better at the box office than movies that rely on excessive immorality or a less family-friendly story.

However, the Globes and others choose to award movies that make significantly less money and attract the smallest audiences.

Thankfully, some of the award-winners used their time in the spotlight to thank God.

Paul Walter Hauser of Apple’s BLACK BIRD thanked “my brother and my king, Jesus Christ” for his win in the Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or TV Movie trophy.

Angela Bassett of THE BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER added, “By the Grace of God I stand here,” after accepting the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture.

Movieguide® previously reported on the difference between Movieguide®’s Award Gala and other award shows:

Compared to last night’s Golden Globes, however, the Annual Movieguide® Faith & Values Awards Gala is a refreshing experience for those wanting to see a clean uplifting program honoring Hollywood for its cleaner, more popular, more inspiring movies. This year’s event, scheduled for February 10, will be the 20th Annual Movieguide® Awards.

The Movieguide Awards stands out every awards season as the place where good values and good content in movies and on television are celebrated. The program itself makes for wholesome family viewing featuring clips of some of the very most inspiring moments in movies and on television from the previous year. Not a word spoken on stage is vulgar. And, the jokes are clean.

This year, the show will be featured on an hour-long show televised on the Hallmark Channel, the biggest television outlet ever for the show.

Year after year, most Movieguide® Awards winners make vastly more at the box office than winners of Golden Globe Awards, Academy Awards, Critic’s Choice Awards, or any other movies, even People’s Choice Awards. The reason is that the Movieguide® Faith & Values Awards exist to honor the decency, faith, heroism, eternal values, and positive role models that the general public buys lots of tickets to see. It stands heads and shoulders above all the other awards shows.
