THE KING OF KINGS just earned $6.6 million on Friday, and its Rotten Tomatoes Audience Rating has jumped to 98%.
Its screen count has increased in its second week by 10%, with 3,535 screens now — another ride on the wave to success. The family film’s total revenue so far amounts to over $45.3 million, per Forbes.
“Very few films in the history of cinema perform like this in theaters,” said Brandon Purdie, Global Head of Theatrical Distribution & Brand Development at Angel Studios. “This kind of momentum isn’t tied to a date on the calendar — it’s driven by the power of the story. THE KING OF KINGS delivers on every level: epic, emotional, and made for the big screen.”
The animated movie shows Charles Dickens’ “The Life of Our Lord” story brought to life through the eyes of his son, Walter, as he witnesses the life of Jesus as his father reads the story to him.
THE KING OF KINGS features an experienced cast of actors: Kenneth Branagh, Uma Thurman, Pierce Brosnan, Mark Hamill, Roman Griffin Davis, ForestWhitaker, Ben Kingsley and Oscar Isaac. It is directed by Seong-Ho Jang.
“Through vivid imagination, the boy walks alongside Jesus, witnessing His miracles, facing His trials, and understanding His ultimate sacrifice,” the synopsis reads. “THE KING OF KINGS invites us to rediscover the enduring power of hope, love, and redemption through the eyes of a child.”
“A film like this could thrive any weekend of the year, because when you bring the greatest story ever told to life with this kind of scope, theaters make room — and audiences show up,” Purdie explained. “At Angel, it’s always been about the audience. And right now, they’re speaking loud and clear — they’re flocking to theaters.”
The movie snagged the No. 3 spot on the box office charts, behind SINNERS and A MINECRAFT MOVIE, Collider reports. It has an A+ CinemaScore. It only dropped by 10% from its first weekend to its second.
