The Super Sweet Way Glen Powell’s Parents Show Their Support
By Movieguide® Contributor
While promoting his new movie TWISTERS, Glen Powell explained how his parents have found their own path in acting, appearing in almost every one of his movies.
“They’ve made it in [every movie] since SPY KIDS 3-D: GAME OVER,” Powell told TODAY.
“They’re right behind Daisy Edgar-Jones and I,” Powell added as a clip from TWISTERS that they appeared in played. “You’ll be able to see them here in a second. Yeah, they’re right behind us there… Look at that.”
Along with having his parents join him as extras on the movie, TWISTERS was a special movie for Powell to make because it reminded him of growing up in Texas.
“I really love this one. Maybe it’s because I feel really comfortable in a cowboy hat,” he said. “This one, growing up in Texas… my friends really want to see this one. It’s great.”
It’s no surprise that the actor took on a role that he connected with and felt would be great for his friends back in Texas. Earlier this year he explained that he believes Hollywood underserves much of America as many in the entertainment industry forget what life is like outside of L.A.
“Having grown up in and around Texas, I’m aware there are vast parts of America that have been underserved in terms of movies that they want to see,” Powell told The Telegraph. “You sort of have New York and Los Angeles making the decisions about what gets made, but there’s a whole lot more audience out there you need to think about.”
When he thinks about the audiences that Hollywood is overlooking, Powell sees an opportunity more than anything else. He hopes that somebody will step up to fill in the gaps rather than falling in line with the rest of the industry.
“The business stopped making romantic comedies, apparently, because romantic comedies weren’t making any money in theaters. But my belief is that there’s no problem facing Hollywood that can’t be solved by a really good movie,” he said.
TWISTERS is now in theaters.
Movieguide® previously reported on Powell:
Glen Powell recently revealed Tom Cruise had to convince him to star in TOP GUN: MAVERICK.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Powell explained that he auditioned for Rooster, a part that eventually went to Miles Teller.
“Not getting it was so wounding to me that I was like, ‘Oh, I care too much,’” the actor said.
The movie’s producers offered him another role, but Powell wasn’t interested in the character.
“I wanted him to be reminiscent of Val Kilmer [who played Iceman] — a guy who was having fun saving the day,” he explained. “But I read the script, and I didn’t like this guy…and he wasn’t even a good pilot.”
However, Cruise didn’t give up on Powell and sat down with the younger actor to talk about his career. Powell ended up taking the role in TOP GUN: MAVERICK and even got to work with the producers to change the character into one he was interested in playing.
