How THE UNBREAKABLE BOY Changed Its Cast and Crew’s Lives

While on the red carpet premiere of their movie, the cast and crew of THE UNBREAKABLE BOY explained how being a part of the movie changed their life.

“I think it’s impossible to see this movie and not be changed and that’s what I love about it,” actor Drew Powell told Movieguide®. “But I also love that it’s a movie about a normal family that lives in Omaha — they still live there, you know — shining a light on what it means to be a family in the good times and the bad times. Not shying away from the hard stuff but also what it means to be a parent with a special needs kid.”

THE UNBREAKABLE BOY tells the story of Austin, a boy born with severe autism along with brittle bones. The movie shines a light on the way that those with special needs can have an immense impact on their community and teach those they interact with a lot about life.

“It affected me by giving me a perspective on how it’s possible to be positive even going through tons of struggles. You can be positive through it all,” added actor Jacob Laval.

Some of the people who worked on the movie brought the lessons they learned into their own parenting. Even when your child does not have special needs, there will still be difficulties that require immense patience and joy to overcome.

“I mean, there’s so many wonderful takeaways from this film…but I think for me, it made me a better dad,” explained actor and producer Peter Facinelli. “I have a two and a half-year-old son and sometimes he gets frustrated with things. And before, when it would start, you know, when a toddler is throwing a tantrum, it’s not easy to stay calm because you get caught up in their energy, but what I learned is to really appreciate even those moments, you know. Find the joy in every moment, so I try to stay a lot calmer and then allow my energy to affect him instead of [his] energy affecting me.”

A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:

THE UNBREAKABLE BOY is a heartwarming true story with a wonderful script and excellent performances. The movie has a strong Christian, uplifting worldview. It stresses family, kindness, faith, forgiveness, prayer, attending church, and redemption. However, there are many scenes involving alcohol abuse because the father struggles with stress and alcohol. UNBREAKABLE BOY also has some light foul language and a brief violent scene. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children.

THE UNBREAKABLE BOY is in theaters now.
