This Book of the Bible Reminds Danny Gokey to Keep God First

Grammy-nominated artist Danny Gokey recently encouraged his followers to keep God first.

“If you’ve ever read the book of Job, it can be a very sobering text to read,” Gokey said in an Instagram video. “As a matter of fact, when you see how he loses everything, gets sick, he loses his wife, wealth, and then he can’t figure out why these terrible things were happening to him. Then he encounters God, and he sees God in His glory, and God restores back another family to him, and his wealth.”

“Many people get stuck there because they say, You know what, I don’t want another new family. I want my old family back,” Gokey continued. “But there’s something in the story of Job that we all need to catch, and it’s simply this: that God always should be in first place. Many times, people put their kids at first place, their spouses at first place, their job at first place. And that’s why life goes upside down, and it’s topsy turvy.”

“But Job understood this: as long as I have God, I have everything I need,” he explained. “Because God gives me the ability to enjoy a wife, God gives me the ability to enjoy family, God gives me the ability to enjoy wealth. He understood that as long as he had God — the One who created kids, the One who created marriage, the One who created all things perfectly to be enjoyed — that he could enjoy everything, even if it wasn’t his first family.”

Gokey ended the video by challenging people to look to God first when things don’t seem to go their way.

“I want to challenge you today, if there is any other thing that takes the place of God, your life will be in a very uncomfortable, very crooked place,” the AMERICAN IDOL alum said. “But if you begin to put God first, even when family members leave you, when people hurt you and when people die, it won’t devastate you. You’ll still be in a place of hope, because you understand that God gives all things richly to be in joy. As long as you got Him, you have everything.”

Gokey is speaking from a place of experience. His first wife died unexpectedly in 2009 during a routine heart surgery.

“They gave me a private room and I yelled out loud, ‘God you have to save her! You have to heal her! You have to. You cannot leave me alone like this!’” he said. “It got to the point where she was gone, and once again that old familiar thing of fear came back into my life.”

But God redeemed his story, and Gokey later remarried and is now a dad to four kids.

“I’ve been through some seasons where God has put me through some intense trials,” Gokey told K-LOVE, “but I’m going to tell you this: It’s all to refine my character so that when He does give the provision, He does give the blessing, He does give the ministry, I remember that it’s because it’s God’s will — not mine — and this is something that I’m able to steward.”
