TikTok Upgrades Web Platform to Keep Up With These Competitors

In an effort to keep up with YouTube and Twitch, TikTok is making some changes to its desktop platform.
As of Thursday, the web experience now features a modular layout, a new Explore tab, a new For You Feed, a collections feature that organizes videos into custom categories, LIVE game streaming and a floating player.
“Our users interact with TikTok in many different ways, which is why we’re excited to introduce these web app updates,” said Cody Puckett, Product Manager at TikTok. “By enhancing our desktop capabilities, we aim to bring TikTok’s handheld magic on desktop, providing an engaging experience with greater flexibility so you can enjoy TikTok anytime, anywhere. As TikTok evolves, we remain committed to innovating for our community and ensuring the platform is accessible for all.”

Gamers now have the function to “go live” in portrait or landscape mode. This move is in direct competition with Twitch, a popular gamer platform.
“Go LIVE in portrait or landscape mode, delivering a full-screen horizontal view for desktop users, while mobile users can simply rotate their devices to enjoy an equally dynamic viewing experience,” boasts TikTok.
TikTok’s new floating player is exclusive to Google Chrome. Like YouTube’s floating player, it allows TikTok to stay visible on top of other windows so users can multitask.
TikTok is also replacing its Creative Center with the TikTok One platform. This feature provides a hub for all creative tools, like creative analytics, campaign creation and Creative Challenges.
TikTok told users, “As part of our transition to TikTok One, we are beginning the process of sunsetting the legacy TikTok Creator Marketplace platform. All of your favorite TikTok Creator Marketplace functionality, as well as your past campaigns, will all be available in your upgraded TikTok One account.”
TikTok believes that all these changes will enhance user experience while meeting the wants of its users.
TikTok also faces competition from Meta. As it’s still uncertain whether TikTok will stick around in the U.S., Meta is considering making its Instagram Reels into a separate app where users could view the same style of videos. Meta says Reels would also feature more video-editing tools than TikTok. It’s unclear if or when this app would launch.
