Tim Allen’s SHIFTING GEARS Pilot Adds Froy Gutierrez, Daryl Mitchell

Froy Gutierrez and Daryl Mitchell have joined the cast of ABC’s upcoming comedy pilot, SHIFTING GEARS, led by Tim Allen.
The show follows “Matt (Allen) the stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop. When Matt’s estranged daughter Riley (Kat Dennings) and her teenage kids move into his house, the real restoration begins,” the official logline reads.
Mitchell has been cast as Ed, “a former Marine. He’s a mechanic at the shop and ‘work husband’ of Frankie,” per Variety. Gutierrez will star as Nick, “Matt’s son and Riley’s younger brother. He’s a game coder but put his life on hold to come home and help his father at the shop.”
While the show has only been ordered for a pilot, Allen is hopeful that it will quickly find an audience. His previous shows with ABC – HOME IMPROVEMENT and LAST MAN STANDING – have been massive successes, largely defining his TV career.
“I am very excited. You know, I tried really hard with HOME IMPROVEMENT, and then LAST MAN STANDING,” Allen told Entertainment Tonight, per Yahoo! News, last March. “Maybe three’s a charm! Maybe I can finally make a statement with this.”
“[Doing a third show is] a big event for me, ‘cause I really loved HOME IMPROVEMENT, [so] to do LAST MAN STANDING was a big push, and then I love that family so much,” he added. “But then ABC said, ‘If you come up with an idea,’ and I said, ‘If I did it, it would be this.’ And then we came up with this idea, and we’re getting there.”
SHIFTING GEARS is penned by writers Mike and Julie Thacker Scully who are also serving as executive producers along with Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements, Richard Baker, and Rick Messina. John Pasquin will direct and executive produce the pilot. 20th Television will produce the show as will Dennings.

Since LAST MAN STANDING ended in 2021, Allen has stayed busy, most recently in Disney+’s THE SANTA CLAUSES. “In that series, he reprised his role as Scott Calvin/Santa. Also at Disney, Allen has served for decades as the voice of Buzz Lightyear in Disney’s Oscar-winning TOY STORY franchise,” Variety reported.
