TobyMac Shares Favorite Song He’s Written Since the Death of His Son

TobyMac is celebrating the release of a new version of his hit song “Faithfully,” one he says is full of “intensity and passion.”

“New version of ‘Faithfully’ out today, streaming at all digital outlets,” the musician wrote in an Instagram post. “The main difference in the recording is that the bridge is musically more driving and sung an octave higher with more intensity and passion.”

TobyMac continued, “One of my favorites off the ‘Life After Death’ album and the first song I wrote after ‘21 years.’ I remember thinking ‘how can I ever write a song again, how can I ever do anything again. Why is the world still moving.’ But our God is kind. He meets us in the hardest, coldest places. It doesn’t scare Him. He remains. I will never be the same man, but I’m a man who still believes.”

“Faithfully” is part of TobyMac’s 2022 “Life After Death” album, which also contains the popular song “Cornerstone,” written after the tragic death of his son.

“This song was birthed at my firstborn’s funeral service,” the singer said in a statement about the track. “A broken man, I looked my family in the eyes and said, ‘We have to rebuild. Our hearts have been shattered into a thousand pieces. We cannot build on the promises of this world. They will let us down every time. We have to build on the promises of God. We have to build our lives on the solid rock, the cornerstone.’”

Movieguide® previously reported on how TobyMac relied on faith to get him through the loss of his son:

Christian artist TobyMac recently shared how his perspective on grief and eternity changed after his son, Truett Foster McKeehan, died of a drug overdose in 2019.

In a video from JOY FM, TobyMac said that grief motivated him to think more deeply about eternity and his relationship with God.

“I spoke about eternity before, but I never really thought about it deeply … because I didn’t need to,” he said. “I always trusted God. I always walked with God. It’s not a question of that.”

But his perspective shifted when Mckeehan died of an accidental overdose at the age of 21. TobyMac said that he was thankful for the support from fans worldwide amid what he confesses to being his first real experience with grief.

“The truth is, I didn’t know grief, really,” he said. “I just felt like everything was beautiful and perfect until the last few years. And then, when we lost Truett, everything changed and I met grief in the fiercest way.”

The artist continued, “I don’t know if I’ll ever laugh as deeply. I don’t know if I’ll ever smile as big. But I can smile and I can laugh. God doesn’t always take away the cold. He promises that He’ll be right there in it with us. That’s what I held on to. And I found Him there, or He found me there. I didn’t know God stayed close in those times, but I’ve learned that He does. I really have.”

TobyMac is also preparing for the upcoming Hits Deep Tour, which kicks off in January 2024.

“Hits Deep Tour is my favorite time of the year,” he said of the concert series. “Not only do I get to see the people in over 30 states but I get to hang out backstage with some of my favorite artists. It’s a diverse night of music that hits deep featuring six different artists and their music. The songs people know and sing along with because they were played on radio, hit songs all night long.”
