Tom Selleck Was ‘Very Supportive’ Of MAGNUM P.I. Reboot

MAGNUM P.I. has finally come to an end, but many fans are disappointed by one missing familiar face — why did Tom Selleck never make an appearance?
“We joked about that very early on in the first season,” showrunner Eric Guggenheim said. “But we never thought getting him was a real possibility. Was fun to dream about, though.”
Selleck might not have ever appeared in the reboot of the show that made him a star, but executive producer Peter Lenkov said the actor was “really supportive.”
“I know in the past they’ve tried to do versions of [MAGNUM], and getting his blessing was very important — and we got that, so we’re very lucky.”
The MAGNUM P.I. reboot came to an end with its fifth season, but star Jay Hernandez has hopes for a continuation of the story.
“I actually floated the idea of a standalone film,” he tweeted. “I suppose it’s still possible. If I’m being totally honest I didn’t love the show ending how it did. That being said, to all the #magnum #ohana thank you for always supporting us! Y’all have been AMAZING. We’re humbled by your dedication.”
The rest of the MAGNUM P.I. cast shared their thoughts on the show’s end with TV Insider.
Zachary Knighton, who played Rick, said, “Maybe we didn’t know the show was going to end, but we had an inkling, so everybody wrapped it up really nicely,” while Perdita Weeks (Higgins) said the ending was “very sweet.”
